When Will Medicinal ‘Magic Mushrooms’ Be Legalized?

Not soon enough. The amount of suffering that occurs every second that proper use of the plant medicines and certain entheogens could alleviate boggles the mind and heart.

**********

Many people have now seen media stories about the renewed research interest in psychedelics as medicines, often called a “renaissance” in psychedelic research, over perhaps the past five years or so. Although many psychedelic substances have been used safely as medicines in indigenous cultures for millennia, we are now seeing renewed interest in these substances in Western cultures. As a co-founder of the Heffter Research Institute I have watched with an increasing sense of both amazement and gratitude — that we have been able to accomplish so much in such a relatively short time. We are on the path to make psilocybin into a prescription medicine! The Heffter Institute has been a key driver of this “renaissance,” utilizing most of the donations we receive directly to support clinical research.

Heffter initially provided major funding for a small study of psilocybin treatment for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) patients, at the University of Arizona. That study provided mixed but encouraging results that have yet to be pursued due to funding limitations.

Our first truly successful study was treatment of 12 terminal cancer patients who suffered from anxiety and depression. They were treated with a program of therapy that included psilocybin, the active component in so-called magic mushrooms. Participants showed a significant reduction in anxiety at one and three months after treatment, with no significant adverse events. That study, led by Dr. Charles Grob at the UCLA Harbor Medical Center, was published in 2011 in Archives of General Psychiatry, widely recognized as perhaps the top psychiatry journal in the world.

We are too uptight about drugs. I wish they would legalize this, but I doubt it will even be mainstreamed for medical purposes since there isn't big money in it for pharma.

It's crazy that people have to suffer because people are so worried that some may use the substances recreationally.

The entheogen I've been more interested in for medical purposes has been Ibogaine. If it actually does work to help treat opiate addiction, it'd be very cool.

It depends on what the effective dosage would be for the individual.

I vaguely recall back in the 70's, dealing with the trauma of being suddenly dumped by the love of my life as he rode off on his Harley, to California, with a girl he met at a bar the night before. (I knew him for 22 days. I Was In LOVE!) Devastated & depressed, my good "real friend" stopped by to lift my mood with the finest magic mushrooms in the State of Oregon. I gave it a shot, after all, what did I have to lose. After 22 days of bliss my lover was gone! Sorrows of youth..Ignorance was indeed bliss, for 22 days anyway.
Well after 6 hours of solid jaw stretching, rib busting laughter at absolutely nothing, I realized that life could be quite enjoyable & just danced in the sun for another 12 years.
Maybe its a remedy for the madness & haters of this world.

I do wonder what the effects of magic mushrooms are on the aging mind.

Seems to me I have read that there is a positive effect that is measurable even a few months after use when treating major depression. That would sure cut into the profits of the daily dose of anti-depressants.

Maybe it'll be deemed useful in a foreign country. We'll have to travel abroad to be treated.
