Got a Criminal Subpoena in the mail
When I opened it and saw it, my first thought was, "What did I do?"
Then as I read, I realized that I was being subpoenaed as a witness to an assault I called in to 9-1-1.
Called 9-1-1 and was a good witness. Drove back down the street to see local PD with the guy in handcuffs, so I presumed it was all resolved. Got a call back later that day from the officer to find out what I had seen, in particular if I had seen the guy actually strike the person he was assaulting. I had not, but it was clear that he was trying to hit her.
Not sure exactly what they will want from me. I know that I could not pick him out of a lineup as I had not clearly seen his face. Found out the state gives me leave for this, so I don't even have to use a vacation day for it.
I have a license to carry concealed, and I know how to shoot. Once beat a nationally known firearms instructor on the draw in a steel plate shoot-off.
First rule of having a gun when you witness a crime, be a good witness. Second rule, call 9-1-1 when safe to do so. Third rule, cooperate with the investigation.
When can you shoot someone? If you reasonably believe you are about to be killed, and if you're observing the crime then you ain't the one in danger.
