(297,220 posts)something important!
Ask anyone if I can stop using "fuck" in my vocab.
The restaurant is keeping me very busy!
Yeah, I don't edit that word out of my vocabulary either. Its a very useful word!

I actually thought about your restaurant when I wrote my post.. how fulfilling for you to have one that keeps you hopping!

(7,820 posts)Seriously, though... I don't have much of an issue with profanity, however, fwiw (probably not much) ... racist, sexist and homophobic slurs I do tend to find offensive. For me they're slightly different issues. Ymmv.
slurs are slurs. Fuck is just profanity...and very versatile too!

(29,414 posts)thanks to both series of Battlestar Galactica, though it seemed far more prominently-used in the remake series from a few years ago. "Frack" is a real word as it is short for "fracking", which most everyone around here likely knows those particular meaning...
Here's a thread where we're attempting to compile the words to use in place of the soon-to-be-banned-on-DU 7-Deadlies

(22,336 posts)Only about language that is misogynist, racist, or homophobic, regardless of whether society considers those words to be vulgar or not.
So I have no idea what this thread is in response to. Did someone complain about the word "fuck"?
Nye Bevan
(25,406 posts)gollygee
(22,336 posts)So obviously the word "fuck" isn't a problem here. So what is this thread about if no one has complained about "fuck" being used?
dorkzilla
(5,141 posts)gollygee
(22,336 posts)but at least that makes this thread makes sense.
People complaining about The Rude Pundit's language seem to only be upset about the use of misogynist, racist, and homophobic language, regardless of whether it's considered vulgar. I am guessing that's what led to this "fuckety fuck" or whatever it is thread, but it isn't a direct link. More of a weird tangent.
I don't care if anyone uses "fuck" but I don't like oppressive language. I do like the Rude Pundit generally, and I'll admit I'd like it if he avoided misogynist, homophobic, and racist language, though I wasn't involved in the particular thread hide in question and I don't think it would have occurred to me to hide it (as I expect stuff from The Rude Pundit and wouldn't notice as much.)
We are adults. I think it's reasonable to ask us to be welcoming to groups that suffer oppression in our society and to avoid language that is part of that oppression, since this is a progressive community, but the word "fuck" doesn't oppress anyone unless it's in some specific context that's questionable - and then it would be the context and not the word.
dorkzilla
(5,141 posts)oddest of all is that the poster complains about using vulgarity by using vulgarities, then in his examples he uses the word "negro". Maybe its just me but the word "negro" is much more offensive than the word "fuck".
nomorenomore08
(13,324 posts)I don't see anyone could equate the two.
mindwalker_i
(4,407 posts)The thing about swearing is that one needs to take it in context. Just swearing to swear is stupid, but using bad words in context to make a point makes all the difference. The Rude One uses language carefully, in that when he swears - admittedly a lot - there's a reason why he picks the particular words he does. In the "fuckity fuck" thread, the use of "fuckety fuck" added nothing above what "people who swear in the title" would have had.
It really bugs me when people get their undergarments in a Calibi Yau over words, without taking into account how and why those words were chosen. It seems like they're taking it more as a chance to hijack threads to get people talking about what they want to talk about, and it has the effect of derailing conversations that other people want to participate in.
The term "misogynist" is used like a wrecking ball around here. It's similar to how "terrorism" is used, or how "communism" was used in the 50s. There are definitely cases where it's accurate and useful to a conversation, but unfortunately it's so overused that it loses a lot of its meaning and value.
Nye Bevan
(25,406 posts)unless of course this DUer was able to persuade Skinner to institute a ban on that word, which as far as I know has not happened. I'm not sure that it's normal practice to start a "silent thread" anytime a DUer has a complaint about something on DU.

(38,187 posts)I just placed someone on ignore for being against the word, fuck, because well, let's just say they thought entirely too highly of themselves at the expense of people who prefer to cut to the chase and just say Fuck Bush or Fuck Cheney. In the words of Barbra Bush, why should I waste my pretty little mind trying to come up with more colorful expressions on such evil, vile, self centered assholes in the BFEE when Fuck the BFEE will suffice.
Laura PourMeADrink
(42,770 posts)heard anyone say it until maybe at the very earliest the 70s but never openly. It always gets me when I see movies set long ago and they say it. Really don't think it was

(42,770 posts)in modern culture. At some point, the word went from being a rare and shocking word to an acceptable word in some places. Definitely not in the south - but east and west coast for sure. I would say in the last 10-15 years this has happened.
So, to see a movie set in the 70s 80s where everyone is freely using it is a total anachronism.

(111,257 posts)My high school in Dogpatch down in Dixie had a few NY transplants come in during my junior year and they all sounded like longshoremen.
When I ran away from home (out of high school, saved my money) in the late 60s, I landed in Boston. Boston Irish led the way in the whole city sounding like a bunch of longshoremen.
I was delighted when I moved out to NM in the early 90s that the local Hispanos were just as potty mouthed. I don't know if it recently spread out here or if it always existed; it's a poor state and there's a lot out here to criticize, full blast.
The reason movies were unrealistically prissy was the Hayes Office, the outfit that thought having actors playing married couples using one bed was immoral and insisted twin beds be used on the set. Yes, they were insane.
I'm against any censorship unless posters are hurling pejoratives at each other. I can tolerate the occasional well crafted insult, I'm talking about hard fighting words against a poster whose POV one doesn't like. That brings down the forums almost as much as picking and carping about ordinary language does.
Laura PourMeADrink
(42,770 posts)hear the word used. At home in CT, my 88 year old mom doesn't even blink anymore if she hears it.
To me, there's something rebellious about using it..like how uncool and dumb are you others to recoil in disgust because of a word someone uses. Like you are not intelligent enough to think it doesn't matter in the big scheme of things.

(111,257 posts)if I ever had occasion to let fly in Texas. It really does seem to be more in the southeast where people are still fussy about language. Nobody else gives a, well, fuck.
And my mother used it from time to time when the occasion called for it. She always expressed utter contempt for "people who wouldn't say 'shit' if they had a mouthful of it."

Whether tis nobler in the mind to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fucks
Or to take arms against a sea of fucks, and by opposing end them.
To fuck, to sleep no more. And by a sleep to say we end the thousand natural fucks which flesh is heir to.
Tis the consummation devoutly to be wished.
