Will Sheriff Joe investigate this tragedy?
Senator's son involved in Gilbert dog deaths
GILBERT, Ariz. -
As the owners of 17 dogs wait for answers as to why their pets died at a Gilbert boarding service, Fox 10 News has learned that the son and daughter-in-law of US Senator Jeff Flake were tasked with caring for the dogs while the boarding houses owners were out of town.
The Maricopa County Sheriffs Office said it appears one of the dogs chewed through a wire that powered the air-conditioning in the section of the home where the dogs were kept. The owners told deputies the power went out sometime between Thursday night and Friday morning. Owners of the deceased dogs claim they were not notified until Saturday morning.
I demanded. I got in the owners face, said Valerie Collins who left her two dogs in the care of the Green Acre boarding house near Gilbert. We went out of the front and he carried my Daisy who was lifeless. I prayed that they were still alive and [the facility's owner] just threw her at my feet like a piece of meat.

(2,747 posts)The one who was supposed to be watching the dogs is married so probably an older son.

(2,747 posts)No remorse - just cried that her family had lost its source of income.
Their story is so full of holes it would be comedic if not for the deaths of those beautiful dogs. I just want to hold mine tighter.

(111,255 posts)but undoubtedly his daddy has his PR people working overtime to sanitize neglecting 17 beloved pets to death by heat and dehydration.
I hope the families sue Flake and whoever else was supposed to be caring for the animals instead of the owners. Unfortunately, the owners are probably the ones who will lose everything because that little punk couldn't be bothered to check on the animals.

(27,461 posts)it doesn't explain how they died. wtf happened?

(111,255 posts)Dogs are hardy animals and require a prolonged period without water for their kidneys to shut down and kill them, say 4-5 days.
Something was definitely amiss. I think Flake flaked out when it occurred to him that the dogs needed their cages cleaned plus some exercise and he just didn't go back to give even minimal care like food and water.
I feel sorry for the owners.

(910 posts)I did a Google search for "dog chewing electrical cords" and this was in the FIRST link:
"While we generally never give our appliances a second thought, they can be very dangerous for playful and inquisitive young dogs. Electrocution from chewing on an electrical cord is the single most common type of electrical injury for household pets..."

(2,747 posts)My puppy chewed through the power cord on my paper shredder and was fine (and my router cable among other things!).
My guess is that they drugged the dogs and shoved them all in the shed. Maybe the dose was too high and that killed them. If this happened at night, which apparently it did, the temps are in the 70s and 80s. That isn't hot enough to cause distress.
This whole thing is very fishy.

(910 posts)But I don't think there will be any criminal charges with a Flake involved.
QED
(2,747 posts)to determine if drugs were involved. They may have been left longer than just overnight.
This is just so incredibly sad and maddening!

Sheriff Arpaio said that his office is investigating and that parts of Hughes' story seems suspicious. "It seems unreasonable that dogs could be healthy at 11:00 p.m. at night and dead by 5:30 a.m. the next morning as the owners suggest," he said.
A veterinarian he conferred with has corroborated his doubts, Arpaio said.
Deputies arrived to find some of the dogs' owners at Green Acres. A couple cried and hugged, as deputies used a wheel barrow to cart off dogs' carcasses wrapped in cloth.
Pet owners told Arpaio that the Hughes misled them about the number of dogs kept at the kennel.

Liars to the pet owners, liars to the police. Killers.

(2,747 posts)There are apparently graphic photos online but I can't look at them. Someone said there is blood coming out of the dogs' mouths.
