(40,367 posts)don't mean to sound like sour grapes, but after the last month of posting about this, I've pretty much given up.
DU is definitely not the vital place it once was. Perhaps I feel foolish for posting at all.

(11,441 posts)So true. So much time and energy wasted on undeclared candidates, vanity posts, fuck wars, HOF v. MRA, etc.

(40,367 posts)as these protests are the absolute front line of the struggle.

(11,441 posts)but here we have these weekly protests -- in the freakin' South -- for workers, women, the poor, the environment, public education, equality, etc. and DU yawns. Perhaps if the Koch brothers take over more states, there will be more interest.

(11,441 posts)DU at one time felt activist; now, not at all. Which is really pretty sad. I just hope those who talk a good game are paying attention to November 2014, because Hagan v. Tillis could be a rude awakening.

(11,441 posts)It's hard to fathom how fucked up Medicaid and the budget process are in this state:
NC Senate wants Medicaid questions answered
And Gambling on the lottery to increase teacher pay:
....
House Speaker Thom Tillis, R-Mecklenburg, said if lottery sales projections do fall short, teacher pay raises would be covered by moving money around, setting funds aside or using "other sources."
....
What a way to govern.

(18,998 posts)And I kick and recommend and read all that I can about MM and others...but I can do little else.
But we present the image that we don't care because we are so busy witch hunting and making list of words that cannot be said or ideas that cannot be expressed that we take our eyes off the prize...and when we do they win... and have been winning.
I strongly suspect that some don't like MM because it is led by a preacher and DU has a number of anti theist who also police us...and are just not willing to accept help from the believers no matter if it cuts off the nose.
We busy ourselves with petty things while the other side scores the points laughing all the way to the goal line.
you, and many care, as I miss many, many threads of importance. I am really not trying to "whine", but this place could use some passion aside from arguing. This movement is in ways akin to the civil rights movement, and other important movements of the past. It is in the tradition that has forced changes in this country. Not much else is working now. Here is a key.

(15,801 posts)I've shared the posts on this, mostly last fall, when my county commishes were spearheading the drive for this part of Colorado to secede. Many of their "concerns" were echoed by remarks by NC republicans. Many of us were pointing out that what NC was doing was the only possible outcome of what the commishes wanted. We'd ask people if they wanted to live in a place that acted like NC; nine times out of ten they weren't familiar with your struggles, so we'd enlighten them. And sharing your story gained us some voices here, and they stood in the cold with us and held signs and handed out lit to those attending a forum on secession (you may have caught a glimpse of us and our signs, CBS Sunday Morning covered the event).
Anyway, my heartfelt apologies for not letting you know that sharing your struggle has made a difference. It's when we keep silent that the awfulness wins. And I'll try harder to say 'thank you' more often. Starting now.
Thank you!

(40,367 posts)Some would say post these stories in the NC forum where they belong, but you demonstrate one reason this is a crucial lesson for the whole country. I'd almost put it up there with OWS in importance at this point.

Rev. Barber to Open Netroots Nation
03 Jun 2014
Were excited to welcome Rev. William Barber, the fiery preacher behind North Carolinas Moral Mondays movement, to Netroots Nation this summer. Rev. Barber will speak to attendees-and help set the tone for Netroots Nation-at Thursday nights opening plenary session.
The big picture: We amplify progressive voices by providing an online and in-person campus for exchanging ideas and learning how to be more effective in using technology to influence the public debate. Through our annual convention and other events, we strengthen the community, inspire action and serve as an incubator for ideas that challenge the status quo and ultimately affect change in the public sphere.
The big event: The ninth annual gathering of the Netroots will be held July 1720 in Detroit, MI. Netroots Nation 2014 will include 80 panels, 40 training sessions, inspiring keynotes, film screenings and other engaging sessions designed to educate, stimulate and inspire the nations next generation of progressive leaders.

(19,964 posts)Yes, there are activists out there that we really should be talking about here. These are the folks on the front lines, putting it out there for all of us! I think the folks in NC especially have been setting an example for the rest of the country.
Just like to say howdy on behalf of these Appalachian activists who have been arrested for protesting against the coal companies:

(40,367 posts)on the first Monday this session. They had just passed a law banning signs and singing or other 'vocal offenses'. The protesters silently passed through the state house with tape on their mouths. I posted the stream and kicked it, but there was no response.
I think it's working because the people are refusing to back down. I hope people pay attention because it concerns the future of this country.

(951 posts)I am proud of the people who are doing this as I know the politicians are just running roughshod over the state. I am hoping that this determination will influence anyone sitting on the side to jump in and save their state. It is not a fight that we can afford to lose.

(22,656 posts)To be there, hear the message, walk side by side, sing, chant and load up the bus to leave. Then do it again. It is an honor to leave a candle on the steps of the legislature hoping they will see their way clear to do the right thing above all.

(239 posts)me to realize that my being quietly "interested" isn't helpful to anyone and I need to
think of ways to promote what they're doing in N.C. It isn't just a N.C. issue but is a mirror of what's happening in every state to one degree or another. The lobbyist loyalist politicians are crushing the state's poor, unemployed, the sick, their environment, their voting rights, and suppressed, marginalized minorities. We need to get a freedom North Carolina going. How great that would be as this is the anniversary of of 1964's Freedom Mississippi. Bad, bad institutional practices need national attention.

(40,367 posts)it's cookie cutter legislation. Too few seem to fathom the extent of their focus and deliberation. ALEC and the Koch brothers are rewriting our laws.
