Stop Pretending You’re Not Rich: Why Are Clinton and Biden Playing Down Their Wealth?

http://www.alternet.org/food/stop-pretending-youre-not-rich-why-are-clinton-and-biden-playing-down-their-wealth

Vice President Joe Biden joined his former colleague Hillary Clinton Monday in trying to play down his comparative wealth. At the White House Summit on Working Families Biden tried to empathize with struggling parents, and he probably went a little too far.

“I can speak a little bit from my own experience,” the vice president told the crowd. He then acknowledged he was wearing a “mildly expensive suit” but insisted “I have no savings accounts” and “I don’t own a single stock or bond.”

“But I got a great pension and I got a good salary,” Biden added.

This comes after Hillary Clinton stepped in it, twice. First she told ABC’s Diane Sawyer she and her husband were “dead broke” when they left the White House – it’s true their debts far outweighed their assets but they both had big book deals – and in an interview with the Guardian published Saturday, she claimed voters concerned about income inequality wouldn’t hold her current wealth against her.

“They don’t see me as part of the problem because we pay ordinary income tax, unlike a lot of people who are truly well off, not to name names; and we’ve done it through dint of hard work.” That was, of course, a jab at 2012 GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney, who pays a low tax rate because most of his income came from investments.

compared to most republican candidates, they are poor.

I have a lot of people ask me for money - I mow my own lawn and put in my own air conditioners instead of converting my house to central air, I don't have things a lot of people have, but I have a roof over my head and can "waste" money on food, relatively speaking. But I knew I was going to be forced out of work before I was 65 and saved money. Not a millionaire, but not poor. so when my friends who traveled the world while they were working or bought designer clothes or was a "shoe" person or bought a house that was bigger than my 2 bedroom house and had pools put in, etc.Anyway, these friends look at me and just assume I am rich and can loan them money without getting it back. Rich is relative, Yes, they are rich compared to me but still. not the kind who can commit to spending a billion on elections like the Kochs. And for any party that let Romney run, ha ha ha ha
it seems like the republicans have spent the last few decades of living I'm rubber, you are glue - everything that they do, they accuse democrats of doing. Watergate - whoo, lets find or at least accuse democrats of doing watergate things - sorry, no democrat ever intervened in a peace process and caused more American deaths. And we didn't even know that part until recently. start the Iraq war - then accuse democrats of starting one - duh hate these people. now it is who is rich. Sick of these stupid gotcha - only don't really have you, only making stuff up so I can convince the brain dead that dems are worse

He chose not to- Just like Pat Leahy and a very few others.

Hillary is NOT poor compared to repub politicians. She and her husband are worth over a HUNDRED MILLION.

this article is silly but not for the bogus reasons you put forth. It conflates Biden with Hillary and that's absurd.

Hillary cashed in.

so while that is a good comfortable amount of money for most people it's not a huge amount in the millions. i'm sure he will make a bit more after he leaves office and writes a book but even then i don't see him getting much compared to what others could.

but i don't think he cares to make a lot either.
