Pet dog scares off bear to save Japanese boy from attack

A placid pet dog was being hailed a hero after saving a five-year-old boy from a mauling by a wild bear in northern Japan, police and media said Tuesday.

The dog, a six-year-old shiba inu, took on the metre-high (three-feet) bear after it attacked the young boy during a riverside walk with his great-grandfather.

The dog barked "unusually loud" and chased off the animal on Saturday evening in Odate, some 550 kilometres (340 miles) north of Tokyo, a local police spokesman said.

If I were coming out with a new album I'd call it "The Dog Barked Unusually Loud." el_bryanto Jun 2014 #1

That is Cavilier Spaniel and Miniture Poodle mix. Cute little bugger and also has an unusually loud bark when bears come around. We have a sow and three cubs (black bears) that have taken up residency in our neighborhood and at least once or twice a week they go through our yard checking their trap line. And as a matter of fact that is one of the main reasons we got our dog. My wife was getting very nervous about being trapped at one end of our porch with a bear on the other end and no way to escape..We have bears on our porch fairly often.. They do not like our little fellow's bark at all and immediately beat feet out of there.

So even a little pocket dog can be an advantage in bear country.
