The hospital administrator who resigned his position as an infection-control specialist at Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs said Monday that he has had a difficult time finding new employment since he left the Alegent Creighton Health-owned hospital.

In 2013, registered nurse Owen Burgin left Mercy Hospital because his superiors refused to tell patients that surgical instruments used on them had not been sterilized, according to a report from the Iowa Workforce Development.

“Alegent Creighton Health takes all patient safety issues very seriously,” according to a statement from Alegent Creighton Health released Monday. “Whenever any such issue arises, Alegent Creighton Health fully investigates and addresses the matter in accordance with its policies and procedures and all pertinent laws and regulations.”

Burgin said it was his job to investigate potential post-surgery infections.
