who bit the girl?

I'm sure there are many sweet, gentle pit bulls out there. But there is no way in the world that I am willing to walk into a rescue shelter and take one home. Apparently, many people agree with me because over half the dogs at local shelters are pit bulls.
Please don't tell me that a given dog is really a terrier or American bulldog or boxer or whatever. People can pick out the dogs descended from those bred to fight regardless of what they are called. (Odd isn't it, whenever one attacks, it's not really a pit bull!)
FWIW, I will never adopt a cocker spaniel, either, They were over bred back in the 50's and still have a reputation for suddenly biting people for no apparent reason. I would think very carefully before adopting an Irish setter; most of the ones I've seen are too high strung for my family. A greyhound retired from racing? I live on a busy road and would be afraid the dog would get out, run and be hit by a car. A border collie? It wouldn't be fair to the dog - I don't have the time to keep one busy. It's time to face facts and realize that while all humans are the same despite superficial differences in skin and hair, but that different breeds of dogs are different breeds precisely because of different characteristics in looks and behavior!

Stories about children getting attacked by dogs are ten-a-penny. Horrible, but true.
This story is notorious because the family tried to use their OWN IRRESPONSIBLE BEHAVIOR to their benefit, and the misery of others (including their little girl).
This poor child is going to need therapy, and lots of it, in future years to deal with the fact that her family not only caused her injuries, but then used them to commit fraud.
I hope that child is taken away from that felonious family.

(13,466 posts)Or choose a dog you are ready for; or GET READY (LOL, like we did when we brought our BC mix home, sweet girl).
I think the Grandfather had a whole pack of untrained dogs. Not a good situation to bring a kid into no matter what.
Pit Bulls seem to be over-bred by very bad "breeders" trying to make a buck. This ends in unwanted dogs dying at the shelter. It can also lead to dogs with poor temperament. The truth is that my Great-Aunt's poor-tempered Chihuahua was never the threat that a larger dog with bad behavioral traits is.
I take this story as a whole; child gravely injured by a dog belonging to the Grandfather who had too many dogs that he did nothing "good" with. This is a cultural thing in various groups of people in this country, or so it seems. Then the hoax is perpetrated for money, probably because there is none to care for this child's injuries properly. I doubt it was designed to avert attention from the dogs, I don't think any of this resulted from rational planning at all.
The dog breed issue is one I try to avoid, I am simply not knowledgeable enough to get involved in it, and do not enjoy getting mixed up in the nastiness it brings. I do know that my dog wants to herd other dogs, cats, people.... It took a lot of work to keep her instincts from being activated by joggers on walks. She also needed a job and I got into dog agility. I do know she has big time instincts inherited from her Border Collie parent; but as to other dogs and what instincts exist or don't exist, I can't say, I don't have the knowledge.
