Spoiler alert:

scores for all current and future sporting events of any significance will appear on the Internet. If you want to keep yourself in the dark as to what is happening for an arbitrarily-determined length of time, stay off the Internet for the duration of that time.

You members of DU (that may or may not log directly on to DU and not surf the rest of the Internet) have no right to express your desire to have the Community Standards of DU address the issue of sporting event spoilers, so STFU.

Did I miss anything?

it's beyond presumptuous to DEMAND that EVERYONE censor themselves in order to help keep one ignorant of daily events

and yes, STFU, because, you know, we're talking about something that's already happened and the results of which are in the news. You can avoid turning on the TV or reading a news site that may give away the score, you can also avoid DU. Complaining about having things like sports scores "spoiled" is narcissistic whining.

sorry, but you have no right to complain about "spoilers". I follow F1 racing; some of the races and qualifying sessions are on quite early, early enough that I don't see them live. If I want to watch the qualifying session or race and not know who won beforehand, you know what I do? I don't go to any news sites where I might see the result, and don't visit any forums where I might see the result. I don't expect the entire world to not talk about something just because I haven't seen it and know how to exercise self-control. Perhaps you should try it.

Some advice about the Olympics and possible spoilers

As everyone here is probably aware, the Winter Olympics start this week. And once again NBC is going to be showing many events on tape-delay during primetime. That means that many DU members will probably not see the events when they are actually happening, and will instead see them for the first time during primetime -- hours after they have actually happened. This of course raises the possibility of "spoilers" -- when you learn the outcome of the event before you actually watch it.

With this in mind, here are a few thoughts...

Advice for people posting about the Olympics on DU
Thread titles: If you want to post about the Olympics it is common courtesy to refrain from posting spoilers in the subject line of a discussion thread. Posting spoilers in the subject line of a thread is considered rude by many people and may put your thread at risk of being hidden by a Jury.

Repeatedly posting spoilers on purpose: During the last Olympics, one person loudly and proudly proclaimed that he was deliberately posting spoilers for every event (for what he believed was a perfectly good reason). Even if you think you have a perfectly good reason for maliciously disrupting DU in this manner, don't do it.
Advice for people reading DU during the Olympics
If you feel strongly that you do not want to accidentally encounter Olympics spoilers, you should not be on Democratic Underground or any other social media during the Olympics. That is just a fact.

You should assume that any discussion thread about the Olympics will include spoilers even if there is no "spoiler alert" warning in the title.

of the matches and they could be seen by me if I chose to stay up at 1~4am. Sometime I do, rarely, most
often I record the games and watch them after I get up in the morning.

I rarely look at the scores online before I watch the game.

BUT, if I go on to the internet there is ALWAYS a chance the scores will appear before I watch the recorded game.
...Anywhere on the internet...
THIS I KNOW FOR A FACT.

But, when I turned on the internet this morning, it popped up right there in front of me. I didn't even have to look. It wasn't on DU, it was on my homepage. I just checked, yep, there it is...the scores and all the fascinating info I don't care about on my screen.

It's unavoidable. My son has a very busy life. When football season pops around, he has to DVR all the Bears games. I refrain from sending him texts and he stays off the internet until he gets home. Somehow, he survives the day without my loving words about football and hasn't been hospitalized from lack of internet.

If it is really that important to someone, I would think that staying off the internet, not just DU, would be necessary. It's freakin' EVERYWHERE! Hell, I even had a client say something to me about it. I feigned interest well enough that he wasn't offended but not so much that he carried on with the conversation.

It...is...everywhere.
