A sober reminder in the wake of the recent SCOTUS ruling on buffer zones

From June 2, 2009--

Drake: Tiller's Murder "An Answer to Prayer"

Wiley Drake, the one time second vice president of the Southern Baptist Convention and the man who last year served as Alan Keyes' running mate, weighs in on the murder of George Tiller, calling his assassination the answer to their imprecatory prayers:

While most pro-life leaders condemned the May 31 murder of a controversial abortion provider inside his Wichita, Kan., church, one former Southern Baptist Convention official called it an answer to prayer.

"I am glad George Tiller is dead," Wiley Drake, the SBC's former second vice president, said on his Crusade Radio program June 1.

I remember reading at the time of similar sentiments from Christian conservatives: "Sorry it happened but glad he won't be killing babies anymore."

This is the mindset that awaits visitors to family-planning clinics...

Dr. Tiller was killed at church.

Truthfully, there is not much anyone can do to stop a determined psychopath from wreaking havoc. No law, no level of security will truly protect us from people who are not afraid to die for their cause.

Fortunately, there aren't very many of these people. Instead, there a a lot of vocal people who carry signs and scream slogans. For the most part, they are sincere in their beliefs- you can be both sincere and WRONG.

The only way to combat this, and the only way to make them question their position, is to be there, en masse, shielding the patients from them, and calmly but firmly explaining why they are wrong.

I was pointing out, though, the mindset of the Christian conservative: "Sorry it happened, but glad he won't be performing abortions anymore" (Read: "glad he's dead&quot .

I remember hearing and reading these remarks and comments after Dr. Tiller was murdered. I thought how callous and hateful.

And this it the kind of mindset we'll be seeing when these folks try "to dissuade" clinic visitors.

I see it here frequently; rejoicing in the downfall of those we disagree with.

Protesters' behavior at clinics will be no different than it has always been. As far as I can tell, only Massachusetts and Montana are affected by this decision; Montana's buffer zone is 36 feet. The Supreme Court previously upheld Colorado's eight foot zone. No other states have laws on the books.
