DEA Asks FDA To Consider Rescheduling Marijuana From Schedule I Drug

In another sign that the 2014 is turning out to be a watershed year for marijuana drug reform, the federal Department of Drug Enforcement (DEA) has sent up the first of what undoubtedly will be the first of many white flags.

After a historic House vote to defund the DEA's operating budget for marijuana enforcement in the states earlier in the month passed (with a similar one now in the Senate), the government agency has now asked the federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to consider removing marijuana from the list of Schedule I drugs as defined by the Controlled Substances Act.

This classification is, most reform advocates say, a major step forward to reform required at this juncture. It is, however, just the first step of many that still lie ahead for marijuana just on a legal and policy level to allow broader medical and continued encouragement for commercial development across the country.

"It is a good sign that the DEA is starting to walk back its policy of interfering with marijuana research and rescheduling," said Morgan Fox of the Marijuana Policy Project, a drug reform focused group. "Unfortunately, this is a very tiny step."

Don't give them anything in return until the can repay, in just the slightest terms, 70 years of lies, political and racial profiling, ruining people's lives with imprisonment, killing people by making them choose between their families or the lives... and on and on.

It's a good FIRST step.

REASON FOR ALERT

This post is disruptive, hurtful, rude, insensitive, over-the-top, or otherwise inappropriate.

ALERTER'S COMMENTS

Not acceptable. ..change white to something else and there would be outrage amd protests in the streets

You served on a randomly-selected Jury of DU members which reviewed this post. The review was completed at Fri Jun 27, 2014, 11:56 PM, and the Jury voted 2-5 to LEAVE IT.

Juror #1 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: She is referring to Congress. Last I checked, it is pretty much a lot of stupid, old, white men in Congress. Let's change that. GOTV !!
Juror #2 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: Stupid alert. It is because of stupid old white men that marijuana is illegal. That's who made it illegal, you know, back when women and minorities were excluded from the legislating process.
Juror #3 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #4 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #5 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: Give me a fucking break. All last weekend we heard how hiding misogynist insults amounted to censorship, and you want me to hide this? Fact, congress is comprised of are old white men. Pretending otherwise doesn't change that reality. White isn't something else. White is the dominant race , the privileged, so changing it makes all the difference. It would also be a complete lie since congress is overwhelming white. Take your BS about racism against whites to some white supremacist or far right-wing site that buys that shit. It has no place among liberals, and SHAME on you for playing that right-wing game here.
Juror #6 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: getting tired of "old white man" racial/age based slurs... would get banned in a minute for saying same thng about a female.
Juror #7 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: No explanation given

Thank you very much for participating in our Jury system, and we hope you will be able to participate again in the future.

I know many, like my husband, for example, and I know there are thousands on this forum. But an alert? Really? This is the majority of our House, a large chunk of our Senate, and most of the billionaires who are running (and ruining) our country.

of a prison system that is comparable to any third world country. Lock em all up, to the tune of 2 million human beings.

A large portion of the taxes collected on the legal sale of marijuana in Colorado is going to law enforcement, because, as you said so well, "the doors won't kick themselves down."

Ah, the irony. We legalize marijuana so we can continue to fund the war on people.

Of course, now that the DEA can't get funding to pursue marijuana arrests, they want it rescheduled.

Before when it was their cash cow...it was not up for discussion.

Well, we were looking for this but found that and you know, our timing just wasn't right or they're funding more dangerous stuff by selling blow.

The whole schedule is a bad joke. Xanax has a low potential for dependence and/or abuse? OMG - that's just friggin' stupid.

I think rescheduling marijuana, especially if it to a Schedule II drug, is a double edged sword. Yes, it would make research easier, but I think it would set back the movement to legalize it.

This is good news, but Justice could shift marijuana enforcement dollars and people to some other crime category without Congress or the FDA or anybody else recategorizing pot.
