Young people, gather round and listen to a great and honorable Democrat.

In this day when impeachment has become a part of the election toolbox, we need to pause and listen to the words of this most important oration to understand how much the political discourse has cheapened. Listen to this woman. I offer you a glimpse into a time when we gathered around a single television set to hear the evening news, provided without a the reporting of internet snark. A solemn affair, the business of governance, and a great legislator doing her job without grandstanding or pony tricks. I give you the inimitable Ms. Barbara Jordan, who should have been our first woman president.

She would have had Dad's vote for President. She was in fact the only public figure my father ever help up to me as an example to follow or a standard to strive for.
Thanks for posting this.

I wish we had a female politician, we could run in 2016 with her gravitas. I bet she would blow the Repubs out of the water..My two favorite female politicians are both from, Texas, Barbara Jordan, and Ann Richards. Thanks for the video.

NO ONE on that committee drove home so forcefully the issue that they confronted as she did! When I listened to her giving that speech in 1974, I was simply awe-struck! She has been a hero to me ever since. If I could've realized my dream of becoming a lawyer, I think she would have been my number-one role model.

That speech was a schooling in the politics of our history. I hear shrill harping in our congress today. This is political gravitas. This is a woman obviously takes seriously, solemnly the responsibility of her position. Try to imagine Ron Johnson delivering such a weighty, such a serious speech.

Barbara Jordan spoke at our church when I was a young teenager, probably around 1963 or so. She was amazing and made such a lasting impression on me. She was an incredible woman.

She was so impressive, had so much gravitas, that EVERYBODY shut up and stepped out of her way when she took the floor. She made you want to stand up straight and make sure your posture was picture-perfect and that your shirttail was tucked in. She made you want to use and embrace perfect grammar and diction. She was the most commanding, articulate, powerful orator I've heard speak in a long time - male OR female. Brilliant, imposing, compelling, and she would have made one humdinger of a great President. Every speech - EVERY doggone one of 'em - would have been an event! She had NO equals.

She was a Patriot, a Hero, and a model DEMOCRAT!
She is one of my all time favorite Democrats.

Today, all the GOP/Repub Congress has or does is based in pettiness -- and the problems we face today are 100x worse than they were in her day.

The entire GOP ought to have this phrase tattooed on their faces. And even then, I'd be surprised if they didn't find a way to disregard it. They are better at that, than at anything else.

the list of business that was under Congress' purview and that the business of the people was being neglected to have to turn to this other business of the people--a corrupt executive. That list is the same as today:

Common sense would be revolted if we engaged upon this process for petty reasons. Congress has a lot to do: Appropriations, Tax Reform, Health Insurance, Campaign Finance Reform, Housing, Environmental Protection, Energy Sufficiency, Mass Transportation. Pettiness cannot be allowed to stand in the face of such overwhelming problems. So today we are not being petty. We are trying to be big, because the task we have before us is a big one.
