The anti-gay hate group formed by a coalition of local churches has been exposed for encouraging voter fraud in yesterday's Anchorage referendum on LGBT rights. As the Facebook screenshot caught by the blog Bent Alaska proves, No On 5 called for unregistered voters to illegally register and vote on the same day. Voter registration for yesterday's election actually closed thirty days ago.
No On 5's Facebook posting was called out immediately by a commenter who was instantly shouted down and told "go back to your pervert website!" Despite a chorus of objections, the post remained up. Bent Alaska's expose has been picked up by local television.
Deputy Municipal Clerk Jacqueline Duke told KTVA because of misinformation election workers have an influx of thousands of questioned ballots coming in. The problem was caused by the controversial Prop 5 initiative that would add legal protections against discrimination to also include sexual orientation and transgender identity. The opponents of the proposition, led by the Alaska Family Council's Jim Minnery, put a message on its Vote No on Prop 5 website saying people could both register to vote and cast their ballot today. That is not case as both city and state laws state you have to register at least 30 days before an election for it to count.

(46,436 posts)What's very odd to me about this whole thing is that the several bond packages, normally "liberal" issues (schools, parks, etc.) passed by basically 60-40 margins, something completely unheard of in tightwad Anchorage where people are always bitching about their property taxes, while gay rights, which was polling above 50% just prior to the election (by Republican pollsters) fell by about the same margin, 17 percent. This makes no sense to me. Why would all those people take the liberal position on bonds but the bigoted position on gay rights?
I've also been posting on this here: http://www.democraticunderground.com/1002515165
Note that several precincts ran out of ballots forcing legitimate registered voters to either go to another precinct and vote a questioned ballot or just go home out of sheer frustration.
This is one of the worst of the worst of Alaska's always "hinky" elections. We need Iran or someone to come in here an monitor them for us.

(46,436 posts)It just seems very, very strange to me given Anchorage's past history with bond proposals which usually pass (if at all) by a very slim margin. Especially given the fact that the corrupt conservative mayor (who also won by an approximately 60-40 margin) is a notorious tightwad.
As Arsenio used to say .... "Things that make you go hmmmm."
Judging from the comments made by Paul Honeman, the losing mayoral candidate, last night, a thorough investigation will be forthcoming. He is a 30-year veteran of the Anchorage police force and has been on our assembly for the past few years. I don't think much will slip past him. Attorneys are already on the job apparently.

(13,812 posts)If cons went to the polls in huge numbers, how in the hell did the bonds pass? All they do is bitch about out of control spending.
Something stinks to high heaven!

(15,949 posts)In Texas we have registered voter roll sign in sheets, and we also must register 30 days before an election. If you are NOT on the registered voter roll sigh in sheet, you don't get to vote. You are turned away without getting the opportunity to vote.
As a Precinct Chair we check the name, address, and our voting unique identifier number issued by the County Elections Admin. Office. Once ALL the info checks out the voter has to sign their name to the roll.

(46,436 posts)but they allow questioned ballots if someone is voting out of their precinct for some reason. All of the questioned ballots that were submitted without the voter being on those rolls will ultimately be thrown out. As I understand it, the issue here is not so much that those votes will be counted as that they used up all the ballots before all the legitimately registered voters could vote. Someone badly underestimated the number of ballots that were needed at each precinct.

(46,436 posts)It's a huge megachurch with radio stations, a school, many properties, and totally unwarranted influence on Anchorage's elections. It's so bad that candidates feel compelled to go out there on "election Sunday" to get his blessing or at least not his curse.
As for the properties, our Republican-led legislature (former Senate Pres. Ben Stevens, Ted's son), has given them property tax examptions on homes for their teachers, all "ministers" including, I believe, their audio-visual guy, and at one point even their janitor. Many of their 24 properties have been exmpted from property tax. You can read more here if you're interested: http://www.adn.com/2012/01/14/2264456/inquiry-targets-church-tax-exemptions.html
Jerry Prevo, Jim Minnery and their sheep-like followers are a cancer on this community.
And a very excellent blog post here http://progressivealaska.blogspot.com/2012/02/anchorage-baptist-temple-prepares-to.html from Mel Green through Progressive Alaska.

(46,436 posts)The city attorney is reviewing whether a shortage of ballots at polling places in Tuesday's Anchorage municipal election resulted in disenfranchisement of voters that affected the validity of the election, the city clerk's office said in a written statement today.
The American Civil Liberties Union also announced it is looking into voter issues and has established a hotline to collect information from voters -- 263-2015.
"At this point, we are gathering information to determine whether action by the ACLU will be required," said a statement from the organization.
The clerk's office, which runs city elections, says it is examining each precinct to figure out which ones ran out of ballots in Tuesday's municipal election, which included votes for mayor and a controversial gay-rights ballot measure, and how each precinct handled the shortage.
