So part of the Brooklyn Bridge's underpass collapsed

http://www.ny1.com/content/news/211601/section-of-decorative-facade-inside-brooklyn-bridge-underpass-collapses-during-storm/
<snip>
A section of the facade inside an underpass of the Brooklyn Bridge collapsed during Wednesday's storm, injuring five people.

The New York City Fire Department says a section some 25 feet wide came down just before 8 p.m.

Among those injured were a mother and a 4-month-old child.

According to police construction, workers were working on the road, and the water rushing into the cracks may have contributed to the collapse.

NY1 is told that the facade is decorative and is not a structural wall.

The Department of Buildings is also investigating.
The bridge was not closed as a result of the incident.

Right under traffic: the I-35 bridge in Minneapolis

It would be really good for the economy to put construction and repair workers to work on these projects. But for some reason, all the talk from Republicans in the 2010 campaign about jobs bills hasn't quite materialized. It's a puzzlement.

As I remember, there was a design change made during the bridges construction, and it was not adequately reviewed. It was not so bad that the bridge immediately collapsed, but it was a very weak link that eventually gave out.

And nothing was done in those four years...then it collapsed.

Design flaw, yes, but could/should still have been caught and fixed before the disaster.

16 Ways Default Will Totally Screw Americans

Rand Paul says default can be 'framed as a reasonable idea' and Tom Coburn wants to default to face a 'managed catastrophe.'

To which I said:

A 'managed catastrophe' by these gangsters? We're officially in hell!

But, never fear, the GOP has a plan! Give that bridge and all roads over to the private sector, just the same as the platform Charles Koch ran on:

“We call for the dissolution of all government agencies concerned with transportation, including the Department of Transportation.”

“We demand the return of America's railroad system to private ownership. We call for the privatization of the public roads and national highway system.”

We should never, ever, give the theocratic traitor Rand Paul the benefit of the doubt on anything!

here's a wiki page that provides at least a partial list of bridge failures...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_bridge_failures

That list doesn't include partial failures, and doesn't list the many bridges that aren't failing but have parts falling off and there are many more of those. There's really no denying that the US interstate hwy system is increasingly falling apart.
