Federal officials have agreed to consider taking Florida manatees off the endangered species list, the Tampa Bay Times reports.
The mammals, which have been on the endangered species list since the list was created in 1967, could be moved to the "threatened" category, a less protective category.
The potential change comes from pressure from the Pacific Legal Foundation, according to the Tampa Bay Times.
Despite the consideration, manatees killed last year set a new record.
