Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) today released the following statement from CREW Executive Director Melanie Sloan in response to news reports that the House Ethics Committee would reinstate the requirement for members to disclose privately sponsored travel in their annual financial disclosure forms.
The ethics committee quickly bowed to public pressure and reversed a terrible decision. Rep. Conaways feigned surprise over the controversy based on his claim that the public hadnt complained about the decision is ludicrous. Like everything the committee does, the decision was made secretly, with no notice or comment, and behind closed doors. This episode demonstrates that the more Americans learn about how the ethics committee operates, the more they disapprove, CREW Executive Director Melanie Sloan said.
