(2,572 posts)I took a two-week cruise on the Freya's maiden voyage from Budapest to Amsterdam. The cabins are comfortable, great on-board amenities, wonderful food. The onshore excursions are fun, with knowledgeable guides. I managed to make enough free time to explore on my own, also.

(8,830 posts)this winter she will be going on a "Christmas Market" tour along the Danube. Here's the one she is going on: http://www.gct.com/trips/river-cruises/europe/christmas-markets-along-the-danube/2014#
She loves them - says the food is good, the accommodation aboard comfortable, and the stops long enough to satisfy. They aren't cheap, but when you factor in not needing to arrange additional transport; different lodging; meals, they work out to a reasonable alternative if you are not enamored of the "if it's Tuesday it must be Belgium" type of tour.
They do tend to attract a slightly older clientele - not necessarily the well-heeled, but definitely not the backpack and hostel set.

(31,404 posts)Ports: Stockholm, Tallinn, St. Petersburg, Helsinki, Copenhagen
I had never been to Scandinavia and we tacked on 2 days prior to leaving from Stockholm
and 2 days at the end in Copenhagen. Cruise was terrific--we chose Seabourn (small ship 450 passengers
max)
Hubby was really looking forward to St. Petersburg but it was a huge disappointment, mostly
because we went on the ship's excursions (otherwise we would have had to get our own visas).
I would advise anybody thinking about going to St. Petersburg to book your own guide. That way,
you can spend as much or little time in any of the places to visit--museums, palaces, churches--as you
want. But, it is VERY expensive to hire your own guide. And the traffic in St. Petersburg is awful.
It's a status symbol to own a car in Russia, so even though there is excellent public transportation,
people would rather sit in a traffic jam from driving their own car. One of our bus guides told us
the night before it had taken an hour and 15 minutes to go three blocks!
I have also heard wonderful things about all the Viking cruises from friends who have gone on them--and liked
them so much, gone on more.
