On Meet The Press, Homeland Security Jeh Johnson repeatedly corrected David Gregorys misinformation based on Republican talking points about the immigration crisis unfolding on the Southern border.
Video @ link:
Transcript:
SECRETARY JEH JOHNSON: First of all, David, the reason were seeing this influx has to do primarily with the conditions in the three Central American countries that theyre leaving from, the push factor.
DAVID GREGORY: More than and its double, though?
DAVID GREGORY: Could it be 90,000 this year?
SECRETARY JEH JOHNSON: Honduras is in a really bad place right now. El Salvador, Guatemala. The push factor is what is driving this recent influx. In addition, we know that the smuggling organizations, the criminal smuggling organizations, are putting out a lot of disinformation about supposed free passes into this country that are going to expire at the end of May, at the end of June. Just give us your money and well get you into the country by the end of the month. Its like a used car salesman saying that the sales going to expire at the end of the week.
DAVID GREGORY: But thats not all misinformation, Mr. Secretary. There is deferred action on some children, passed in 2012, that will allow some children of illegal immigrants to stay.
SECRETARY JEH JOHNSON: Well, thats the point we keep stressing. The deferred action program is for kids who came to this country seven years ago. Its not for anyone who comes to this country today, tomorrow or yesterday. And the legislation that the Senate passed, which provides for an earned path to citizenship, is for those who were in this country in 2011. Its not for those that are coming here today.
DAVID GREGORY: How many the numbers, again. I mean a year ago its 26,000. Its double that. Could it get up to 90,000 this year?
SECRETARY JEH JOHNSON: I believe were going to stem this tide.
DAVID GREGORY: I know, but my question is how bad could it get? How many more are we going to see? People want to know the challenge you face.
SECRETARY JEH JOHNSON: I believe well stem this tide. And were doing a number of things to do that right now.
DAVID GREGORY: So you dont think the numbers will go up, is what youre saying.
SECRETARY JEH JOHNSON: The numbers have very definitely
DAVID GREGORY: Right. I mean theyre certainly going to go up from where they are, if theyre already double this year, and were sitting here in the summertime.
SECRETARY JEH JOHNSON: They have definitely gone up. But I believe we will stem this tide. We are doing a number of things to do that. With regards to the adult population, who are coming here without their kids, we have dramatically reduced the turnaround time from something like 33 days down to four days.
With regards to adults who are bringing their children, were bringing on additional detention capacity. Were turning that population of people around quicker. And with regards to the children, very definitely there are special considerations with the children. And we keep reminding people of the dangers that your lead-in points out, to climbing on board top of a freight train.
Ive spoken directly to kids on the border whove told me that they have held on for days and hours to the top of a freight train, literally holding on for dear life because they risk falling off and dying. We keep reminding parents of the dangers of sending your children unaccompanied on this journey, this long, 1,000-mile journey, and that there are no free passes once you get here. DACA is not available for these children.

Irresponsible journalists like David Gregory only make the crisis worse when they try to exploit the partisan divide for ratings. It is shameful that a guest had to correct the misinformation that the moderator of Meet The Press based his questions on. David Gregory chose to play political games instead of informing his viewers. There is a humanitarian crisis unfolding on the border, and in a quest for ratings, Gregory pandered to Republicans instead of reporting on the story.
David Gregorys handling of this interview demonstrated the main reason why the ratings for Meet The Press are in the dumpster.

(32,060 posts)The "liberal media" is why we can't have a reasoned immigration debate: The lies of Alan Long, Rick Perry, Darrell Issa, etc get WAY more airtime than facts like Sec. Johnson stated, "The deferred action program is for kids who came to this country seven years ago. Its not for anyone who comes to this country today, tomorrow or yesterday." The only mainstream outlet that takes on the lies of the right? MSNBC in primetime.
At least ABC has been a bit more sane with the immigration debate, with Martha Raddatz giving the paddlin' to Rick Perry going all tinfoil hat on air:
And having another interview with Obama stating: "Do not send your children to the borders. If they do make it, they'll get sent back. More importantly, they may not make it."

With republicans, he'll bring up a Democratic point, let the republican give a BS response and will never follow up pointing out the dishonesty of the reply.

(57,936 posts)He kept referring to the processing of immigration cases.
He should have explained that those cases are processed according to existing American law, each case on its own merits. He really did not answer the questions, and the answers are quite simple. Next time, the White House should send an expert on immigration law to answer these questions.
The courts may acknowledge the right under our law for some of the "illegal" immigrants to stay and may send others home. This is not such a simple issue. We have laws. We have courts. The courts apply the law case by case -- each of the thousands of cases will entail a hearing I presume.

(67,782 posts)...and Johnson thankfully refused to accept the premise of the biased question.
The only reason I actually saw it was because I was watching MSNBC when the repeat came on at 2:00 this afternoon. I haven't watched that show in years simply because of Gregory.

The USA turns around" real illegals "in three days ,these people are refugees!
I wish we would deport all the Republicans and replace them with these women and children refugees.

(3,300 posts)when Dickhead kept repeating the question about how many will be staying here. He should have politely explained to poor confused Dickhead that we have laws regarding the admittance of refugees and those laws have to be followed also, which can greatly slow processing. Poor Secretary has no crystal ball to predict, as Gregory demanded, how many more could arrive?, what would be the total?, would they stay here or be deported?, and Dickhead also somehow believes we should invade Mexico to catch people before they can reach our border, then make sure they head back the way they came, probably to certain death. Once they reach the US we need to do the humanitarian things required by our values which is not to turn them around, give then a bottle of coke and a candy bar, and send them walking back the way they came.
Dick is such a dick it makes me sick! And yes he does look like a dog! And that's bad news for dogs!

(22,651 posts)A couple of times a day I see women carrying a baby ,sometimes with a child-obviously walking to a relatives house.
They look scared and very tired. It is not in my nature to ignore even an animal in distress and so I call these humans over to me.
I let them use the phone ,the restroom , have something to eat and call their relatives.
A local family member picks them up fairly quickly.
I've never experienced refugees in distress before in my life.
Texas State government should be doing much more!
I've never been more ashamed of America especially the Republican behavior!
Ps- Sunday morning news shows have been ruined by Republican propaganda.

(9,289 posts)No doubt the "push factors" mentioned by Johnson are primary drivers, but the rest is still cloudy. Gregory is pushing the rightwing line that the deferred action program is the source of the problem. That is pure wishful thinking on the part of those who want to pin the problem on Obama.
I suspect that part of the problem is due to backlog in immigration courts. If a child travels to reach her family in the US and is detained, her family is located and she is released into their custody with a notice to appear in immigration court. That keeps her safe from deportation until the court date. Because of the backlog in cases, that can be a very long time. So the "permiso" that recent immigrants are talking about could be the notice to appear. That seems to be what is suggested by the INS report in Texas that everyone is talking about, but the facts remain unclear.

(10,252 posts)Are you some kind of masochist? Haven't you learned by now that he's just a pretty boy in an expensive suit, but a real journalist? No way. I would have watched Face the Nation this morning, except they booked both John McCain and his BFF Lindsey Graham. Watching McCain pout and Graham fear-monger and whine, well I wouldn't get caught dead watching those two. Watching baboons on Animal Planet would be more informative than watching those two. Can't you think of something better with your time than watch David Gregory? Man, you gotta start practicing a little more TV watching descrimination.

(90,829 posts)The children, my gods little kids. Early on I heard an interview with a Border Patrol agent who seemed rather shaken; he said some of the kids were like 5 years old and if you asked them their mothers name they'd say "Mami," and for their fathers name, "Papi." When asked for where they lived they'd say "En la casa."
And the fools screeching at the busses and shouting "USA! USA!" -- they make me ashamed to call them my countrymen.

(8,200 posts)Why are Obama's rating so damn low in view of his accomplishments. Its very simple, the MSM fails to provide him any recognition while they concentrate on the phony trumped up "scandals" of the IRS, Benghazi, AFCA, etc. I have yet to read one article in my newspaper that is supportive of the president or critical of the Republican obstructionism. The Republicans politicians are given a free pass to say the most outrageous about the president without a whimper from the boot licking press.

As for pandering.. that is what most journalists do today. They may still hold honorable ideas about journalism and relaying the news but so many are forced to sensationalize and manipulate news/current events because the corporate media has mandated placing profit over honest journalism. Sensationalization and manipulation causes individuals to engage in an information feeding frenzy which as the secondary effect of putting people at odds with each other. The result (as an example) is people flocking to yahoo news to comment and then reply to comments over and over again. Each page hit is another page viewed with advertisements. Each additional minute watching cable news results in more people watching commercials. It results in increased ad revenue. Most news media outlets are owned by just a handful of corporations and their prime mandate is to compete with each other.
