A question for your winger friends: if you were wrong, would you want to know it?

Last edited Mon Jul 7, 2014, 12:50 PM - Edit history (1)

This question breaks down the calcified walls of thought.

If the answer is no, they have that to live with.

If the answer is yes, the conversation can move forward into how we know something is true or not.

Without getting lost in philosophical dead-ends and counting angels on a pin, this is the best question I've found to build bridges.

They were right back where they were before I presented the proof. Am I going to cease giving the correct information, hell no, they need to be told the truth.

[font color="navy" face="Verdana"]One person I used to know would counter with that flat declaration whenever presented with information that contradicted his mindset.

No further discussion was possible because for him, it was already "case closed." I dealt with it by avoiding any contentious topics altogether and redirecting him if they did come up.

His widow is no more flexible and certainly much more argumentative. Avoidance doesn't always work, as she will aggressively impose her opinions whenever she can. It's an eggshell dance for me whenever we do see each other.

One of my very good friends is in his early 70's. He was a Huey pilot in Vietnam and was against the war in Iraq but not Afghanistan. His failing health is directly caused by agent orange and the VA not telling him for almost a year.

For some reason he absolutely HATES Obama. He isn't a racist person but he is on an Internet board site to the unit he served with and that site is very anti Obama. He also thinks fox newz is the "real news". He sends me meme pics of Obama that aren't true "birth certificate, Muslim, communist, etc.". I don't try to dispute him by email or texts, but when I go over to his house I will bring up the emails and hop on his computer and show him how fake it all is. He still won't believe for whatever reason.

I have since stopped trying to correct him or show what he is saying is wrong or just flat out lies.

What can you really do with that? I hope he can recover his health. My Dad said they fed agent orange to goats because i t made them grow quickly. He volunteered, left his bank job to help. Words really fail when I try to describe how disappointed he was with our government for lying to him and wasting their sacrifice.

Good luck with your buddy.
