Auburn, NY (WSYR-TV) The Harriet Tubman Home in Auburn has cleared the first hurdle to becoming a National Historical Park.
The US Senate passed legislation on the designation on Thursday.
Now the bill will go to Congress.
The bill would cover both the Harriet Tubman Home in Auburn and the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Historical Park in Maryland.
The Cayuga County Office of Tourism says the designation would create about 70 new jobs and would expand tourism in Cayuga County, bringing in an estimated $3.12 million annually.
Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand along with Congressman Dan Maffei announced the bills passage in the Senate.

(205,764 posts)We had Republican representation here in the NE for as long as I can remember until Kirsten Gillibrand was elected in 2006. There were elections when the Democrats didn't even bother to field a candidate. And one of the coolest things about Kirsten Gillibrand's run was that President Clinton came to the district to campaign for her! We got to see and hear him and he sure is a charismatic speaker!

In the store today I noticed on the newsstand that Nat Geo has published a special "Great Women" issue and one of the features was on Harriet Tubman.
