How long do you give this e-mail friendship with a wingnut?

I just had a renewed contact with a formerly close friend, co-worker for 22 yrs. Politics had not been a major item in our past friendship. She is intelligent, cultivated, Protestant (as opposed to Fundie or Catholic), PIERCING like all Libras. Now in our old age and our years of separate development, she turns out to be a political zealot of the Rethug variety. On the topic of HANNITY bashing the President about the border, she wrote:

So I replied:

First, I thought you said no e-mails about OBAMA! You apparently meant no PRAISE from me, but not excluding yours BASHING him. I try to answer all questions, unlike the local radio wingnut, who ignores what I call the Eternal Questions, like, “How can a DECENT human be a Republican?” But back to the discourse: Most of my e-mails are not political, but delightful vignettes of my daily sturm und drang (is that Nazi enough for you?) . The political stuff is not of the IDOLATRY variety, rather news items bashing Rethugs/Wingnuts/gunnutters/TeaBaggers.

So, to really answer your questions: Who/HANNITY/slaughter:: Rethug POLICIES perform societal genocide. “The great governor” ---------OH. MY. GAWD, I can’t believe what I’m reading! That’s some powerful filter you’ve got about the boy.

I am a Democratic party loyalist by family heritage and personal conviction. I am a True Believer.

O.K., the political background: Besides the lifelong allegiance, since retiring with my Al GORE internet, I have spent about 2 hrs daily on a political discussion board for Democrats, so there is nothing you can bring up that will sway me. I have attacked the local radio wingnut for 20 yrs, but he and I know that neither one of us can be CONVERTED or DEFEATED. “Debating” and “discussion” are FUTILE. Really, all that is left between entrenched political opponents is to mock each other. Or just avoid politics (and religion). He laughs frequently on the radio, saying that he has mellowed over the years because he’s HEAVILY MEDICATED, haha!!!!!!

Just so you know my political dictionary/vocabulary:

* No such word as “Republican.” I use only Wingnut; Rethug (as in THUGS, like the Coup 2000 thugs storming the stolen election office); TeaBAGGERS (not “Tea Party”). It was hilarious that when they first hung TEA BAGS on their hats they had no idea it was a SEXUAL reference. So I call them TeaBAGGERS.

* Gun-nutters: The “Open Carry” a-holes = the ones who (legally) carry the long rifles strapped on, want to be in J.C. Penny’s and Starbucks with rifles. What pitiful sexually inadequate jerks. I’m a veteran. They AREN’T.

* Pro-CHOICE. I’m not pro-abortion. Other people’s decisions FOR THEMSELVES are NOT MY BUSINESS. NOT the government’s business. NOT Bible Thumpers’ business. Notice how Wingnuts claim they want government to BUTT OUT of their lives (really, what they mean is, their TAXES), but they want everybody else to live by THEIR religion, look LIKE THEM.

* “Governor GOODHAIR” = “great governor". “Shrub” is W. Bush. Both of those names came from the brilliant, late Molly IVINS.

* Idolatry. I do not worship OBAMA, Hillary, or most politicians. I believe in the general Democratic AGENDA of social justice, investment in human potential, care for the needy, civil liberties. I grew up with strong women in my nuclear and extended family. One of the Eternal Questions is: How can ANY minority (Hispanic, Black, women, disabled, Gay) SIDE WITH THE OPPRESSORS?!!!!! It’s incredible. Do all of you suffer from the Stockholm Syndrome?!

I am very well aware of being surrounded by Wingnuts locally, in this supposed “Blue” region: Young minorities who somehow identify with their oppressors and are ignorant of history. Medical Equipment business owners who make their money from MediCARE (a Democratic program), yet base their Rethuglicanism on decrying “Welfare”. Veterans who talk like draft dodger John WAYNE and say they are Rethugs because “We (vets) ‘do better’ (WITH BENEFITS) under Rethugs.” In other words, those veterans who SOAK UP benefits they would call “Welfare” if somebody else got them. Rethug-ism is all about GREED, HYPOCRISY, and SCOUNDRELISM. Oh, and racism.

So a personal Eternal Question for you, you who are a strong, independent WOMAN: You were a single, working mother for many years. How can you support your oppressors? You and the young minorities will have to LEARN HISTORY THE HARD WAY.

We can avoid the politics, which is difficult for me since it’s an obsession, or rather I give it its due as a major part of human anthropology. Or we can accept we can’t CONVERT each other and just snipe. Or, we can just drift away. Back in ‘04 I made contact with a group from my ship in Vietnam, a group of my shipmates. For the first couple of months we just caught up, were happy to find each other. Then the real purpose of their group became obvious: To spread wingnut chain letters attacking all Dems, but especially KERRY. Anyway, I tried debating them for a couple of months, but then, with another putting-away-of-the-Past, I told them off and Deleted them. That’s one way of dealing with political disagreements.
