(269,094 posts)the ReTHUGS did not have the 2/3s majority.
Looks like the Feds will have to step in here.
Yep Michigan Dems have sued them for preventing them from voting.
And as I posted a few days ago a judge is on their side.
I'll repost Rachel's video

(9,314 posts)place was just moved to an area 20 miles from her. Not unexpectedly the voting precinct is made up of elderly and poor. That's what happens in Virginia when the republicans get in power.

(9,314 posts)has to drive a 2 lane country road for 20 miles to get to her polling place. It was just a couple of blocks away before the redistricting. There is a low income housing apartment building close to where she lives and most of the houses in the area where she lives have older, poorer residents. There is also a trailer park in the district and a high black population. Coincidence that her district got changed and the very white, somewhat more affluent area where I live didn't get changed? I'm surrounded by white Republicans and she's surrounded by people who are of demographics that are usually Democrats.
My friend is disabled, living on disability and has a car on it's last leg. The road to the polling place is not one some elderly people will feel comfortable driving - it's narrow and very curvy.

(269,094 posts)and the time allowed before a bill can take effect - ninety days after the end of that legislation.
It can only be passed with 'immediate effect' if there is a 2/3 majority in both chambers of the legislature under 'immediate effect'
The ReTHUG authoritarian governor and his goons have passed
546 of 566 laws under 'immediate effect'.

(26,549 posts)The Republicans just asserted that 12 Democrats voted for immediate effect. No actual vote was taken.

(40,656 posts)in charge tapping a gavel after asking for the count and it wasn't taken. They are violating their own constitution and the law, the freaks. 546 laws were passed illegally. I wonder if someone can get Holder to care? This needs federal intervention because of the emergency management law violates the constitution of the US, voting laws and human decency.

(50,397 posts)it was not overblown as to being a bombshell. Completely unconstitutional, undemocratic, illegal actions by the Republican Congress in Michigan. They have even denied the Democratic congress members the right to vote.
Geez, scary shit.

(36,392 posts)It's weird how the worse things get, the less we actually do. When you look at it, it's not much of a surprise that fascism is in full flood - the most violent resistance they've had to face are some posts with dozens of rec's. I wonder how many bullies have been stopped by their victims comparing outrages amongst themselves.

(228 posts)The first session started Jan/2011. Over 500 laws were started immediately instead of Jan/2012 + 90 days.
So they didn't have the 2/3 required. Why hadn't the Dems responded to this injustice before now?
It also begs the question, why would Dems have all voted no on legislation but then at least 12 of them vote for it to start immediately?
Wow, I don't get it.
Who can step in there to solve this mess?

(16,685 posts)It's really obnoxious to post something about what you've seen on TV or heard on the radio with no background story or links so that other people who haven't seen or heard it about can know what the hell is being talked about.

(652 posts)What happens here can happen to a state near you.
Last summer I worked sooooo hard trying to collect signatures to recall Snyder, the governor. We could not get enough signatures. (We needed 806,000). Why? Because this effort was TOTAL grass roots - no media attention, no union support, no money.
Almost all of the people who saw the volunteers RAN TOWARDS US to sign the petition, happy to see us. Those that supported Snyder would drive by the volunteers, never getting out of their cars, yelling "GET A JOB" Really? Too scared to debate the issues? The facts?
Another recall effort is in the works, but....I am not optomistic. Snyder has money, the media, etc.....
I am very happy that Wisconsin got the attention it deserved. Wisconsin had union and media support. Not so in Michigan. Now that the Democratics have sued the republicans to allow them to vote before a bill is instantly made into a law, per the Michigan constitution, maybe things will change.
young_at_heart
(3,770 posts)I guess the Michigan Republicans assumed they could get away with breaking the law and no one would notice. I wish the Dems had made a loud stink to the media!
