Cheney: Hispanics 'Ought To Be' Conservative Because They're Religious, Hard Working

DANIEL STRAUSS – JULY 14, 2014, 2:33 PM EDT

Former Vice President Dick Cheney said he sees many people in the Hispanic community who should be conservative because they're religious and hard working.

The former vice president's comment on Monday came in response to a question by Politico's Mike Allen about if he was worried about where the GOP is among Hispanic voters.

"I am one of those people who believes that the party ought to be doors wide open for everybody," the former vice president said at the Politico event. "And I see a lot of folks in the Hispanic community. Those are people who ought to be conservative — religious. And are here in many cases because they worked very very hard to get here and because they care about those things."

On the larger point of Allen's question Cheney said he disagreed. Allen, in posing his question, said "it's a mathematical certainty that if the Republican Party doesn't increase its base, it's not going to win the presidency without a new message for young people, for gays, for minorities."

Gun? God? Hate gays? Yes = Republicans. It cuts down in actually doing anything for people and campaigning.

it seems to me that many Hispanic people have a stronger sense of community than Anglos, and are more willing to work together to accomplish goals that benefit the greatest number of people.

Views like that are antithetical to the Republican Party.

But if anti-Hispanic bigotry rears its ugly head in a GOP candidate, they will vote Democratic. If not, they may not. Those I know are not into community if government is part, preferring church or business networks. Otherwise, they are apolitical.

They don't believe in the government's power to help their families and see deportation as a threat to their families and bigotry. Those from Mexico see government as a tool of the rich only, and seek to make their own way in life with no association at all.

Some have dabbled in the Tea Party. They are pro-military as they got college eduations and later jobs in contracting from it, pro-gun as they see criminals not being punished, pro-business as that's who pays them and they don't care for regulations. It is a different way of living and thinking.

The reason Jorge is in power in Texas now, is he is being groomed for bigger things. He is one to be watched, more than Jeb. The statistics show more Hispanics voted for the GOP in some major elections in Texas. Which may work against Wendy.

Your experience is very different from mine, from a southern state.

He came and asked me about the Parties. 'Which one had Pete Wilson?' That was all it took. A Democrat from his first vote.

mo'fo is off his rocker. There is no way he will welcome the Hispanic community with open arms other than to lie to them to try to capture a vote or two. He is one delusional jackass in thinking that anyone anywhere will believe a word of what he said. Whatever they did that allowed him to be the recipient of a heart transplant needs to be changed. Not enough implantable hearts to go around for the good folks let alone for a war criminal like him.

they will stop pushing 'punishment' for hardworking Hispanics who have shown themselves to be productive members of American society despite having crossed the border without permission, and stop pushing voter ID laws to disenfranchise minorities as a whole.
