http://www.slate.com/blogs/xx_factor/2014/07/15/women_s_health_protection_act_a_brilliant_bill_to_protect_women_s_abortion.htmlSen. Tammy Baldwin and Sen. Richard Blumenthal announce new legislation to protect abortion access.
Democrats in the Senate on Tuesday took a major step in pushing back against the growing trend of regulations that are designed to shut down safe abortion clinics. The Senate Judiciary Committee is hearing testimony on a bill introduced by Sens. Richard Blumenthal and Tammy Baldwin, a bill that would do significant damage to anti-choice efforts to go around Roe v. Wade by regulating abortion clinics out of existence. It's called the Women's Health Protection Act, and it would end the attacks on abortion clinics through one simple measure: requiring states to regulate abortion providers in exactly the same way they do other clinics and doctors who provide comparable services. No more singling out abortion providers.
The bill goes into detail about the specific abortion-only regulations that would not be allowed, but the general principle is that if you don't require it for other outpatient procedures, you can't require it for abortion. Want to force women seeking abortion to listen to a script full of lies and then make them wait 24 or 48 hours to think it over? Better be prepared to do the same for people who need colonoscopies. Want to require a bunch of unnecessary visits before a woman is allowed to have a procedure? Now you need to do that for a biopsy, too. Want to force abortion clinics to meet ambulatory surgical center standards and abortion providers to have hospital admitting privileges? Well, dentists will have to meet the same standards before they can drill a tooth. If this bill passes (more on that below), states would be forced to let abortion providers operate in peace or make everyone elseincluding, gasp, menendure the same kind of hassles and mistreatment women seeking abortion now have to endure in much of the country.
Now, the bad news: This bill has no chance of getting through the Republican-controlled House. But it's still an important move on the part of the Democrats to introduce it. The ostensible excuse for all these excessive regulations on abortion clinics is that they're necessary to "protect" women's health. By introducing this bill, Blumenthal and Baldwin are pushing Republicans to admit the truth about the targeted laws or to explain why they believe women, as a class, cannot be trusted to exercise the same personal responsibility for their health care decisions that men enjoy. Considering that the Supreme Court will almost surely be ruling on the legality of these kinds of regulations within a few years, exposing and emphasizing the motivations behind these regulations can only help the pro-choice cause.
Then again, in Burwell v. Hobby Lobby, the court already signed off on the idea that woman-specific health care should be held to a different standard than health care for everyone, meaning that they may not be moved by the deep unfairness of requiring women and only women (and their providers) to jump through hoops for a simple outpatient procedure. But at least Democrats are taking measures to make the unfairness of it all clear to the voters.

(63,912 posts)we will be in Door County next month...he and his sister have a house there that they inherited from their parents. So I'll be eating brats and going to fish boils and Frdiday night fish frys in another month...

(63,912 posts)however, out of respect I do not make a fuss. I like very fresh pan fried lake perch, tho. And Door County has upped its game over the years since I've been visiting there. It is much more urban oriented in its appeal (probably to affluent Chicagoans). I love the local art galleries and the symphony orchestra is absolutely top notch! We will miss all but one of their concerts which is greatly disappointing. But my husband has some real health issues that keep us here for a bit longer than usual.
I love the air up there, too, in August. It is vile here. Also, it is so peaceful. I get to sit on the deck in the early morning sun and have my coffee in a beautiful setting and just listen to the wind in the big tall trees...

(53,475 posts)... I will generously allow to remain unnamed.
The huge vat in which the fish and potatoes were boiled was hung from a tall tripod behind the restaurant, over a large fire. All the dinner guests were invited to sit in back and watch the fire as it licked the giant vat. At the penultament moment, someone threw kerosene on the fire, causing it to roar up and the vat to boil over. Large, fishy smelling bubbles ran down the sides of the vat and crackled as they landed in the fire.
We were then escorted inside, seated at a small table decorated with fine china gracing a white, heavily starched tablecloth. Our food was served by a very pleasant and proper waitperson.
The potatoes tasted like fish. Both the fish and the potatoes tasted like kerosene. Neither was edible, at least by my standards, and that's not a real high bar. At this point I knew why we had been required to pay in advance.
To add insult to injury, before the desert was served, an elderly gentleman came by our table and played military hymns on an accordian. I've never felt any need to go back.

(63,912 posts)of both together! I mean, seriously, when I was recovering from several abdominal surgeries and couldn't eat much, I lost 30 lbs and my doc told me to gain 5 back. I left for vacation to Door County and ate cherry pie a la mode -- two glorious weeks!

(3,226 posts)If they are not anti woman then they need to prove it.
If the bill is written to insure that "states shall pass no laws regarding a woman's health care that is more restrictive than any other health care laws in the state" this would focus the issue on health care and not just abortion.

(82,849 posts)When there is a record of Democratic initiative like this, even if it doesn't succeed, it can motivate the base and make it easier to persuade voters to get to the polls in November. It's a wacky idea, but it just might work: Instead of waiting and reacting to the latest brain fart from the Republicans, Democrats should propose legislation supported by their own party.

(10,495 posts)I for one am tired of crap that has no chance. The House Republicans have shown that they aren't afraid of votes like these and the MSM will virtually ignore it. This is that same red meat shit, wait, I guess for us Progressives it's fish instead, that their base expects of them. We laugh at all of the red meat the Republicans have to feed their ravenous base. Don't get me wrong, I would be overjoyed if this would ever pass, but admit this for what it is!
If we want something to change in our political climate, we will have to change the climate ourselves! I propose we GET THE MONEY OUT OF OUR ELECTIONS so our politicians cannot be legally bribed! To do this I suggest we fight/protest (peaceably) for Publicly Funded Federal, State, and Local Elections (PFE) Make the MSM donate the campaign commercials as a public service for the right to operate on the Public Airwaves so there would be little costs to taxpayers. How many of the things we as Democrats/Progressives care about are being blocked by the Plutocrats and their (formerly our) politicians. They answer to Donors, not us.
September 13th - November 4th (Election Day) and beyond we protest getting the money out of Politics by demanding PFE's!
We can point out what each candidate has raised and punish the biggest fundraisers who have collected the most bribes! Because of the narrow focus even the most politically ignorant would hear about it if we can do so in cities around the country in big numbers. Hell, even Republicans would support this if we said to them that "Unions, Trial Lawyers, and the most evil of all, George Soros will buy your Representative!!!"
If you care about politics, and you do or you wouldn't be here or have read all of this, you know that despite our victories it seems we take one step forward and 5 steps back. I need your help. I am not good at this internets stuff, or in the mechanisms to accomplish PFE. I just know it has to be done to save our country and the world my kids and grand kids have to live and grow up in! And to the nay Sayers who poo poo this or say I am all talk, I am organizing my city! THIS CAN WORK, BUT ONLY IF YOU HELP ME GET THE WORD OUT AND GET OFF THE COUCH!!! Peace!

(14,274 posts)Well since you start off by saying you "hate to be the only nay sayer here"... I guess you know where this is going.
So you want us to help you, but you are too tired to support the Women's Health Protection Act? It's all just a big distraction and a joke to you? "I would be overjoyed if this would ever pass". Then don't tell us it's a waste of time. Most grown ups I know are completely capable of multi-tasking. At a time when women's bodies and rights are under major attack, your post appears incredibly insensitive.

(10,495 posts)I view this as the same kind of red meat that goes nowhere that the Republicans use for their base! We merely disagree with the method, not the goal. The point of my post was to interest people here of another way and could be in addition to this bill if they choose. I think that most people don't usually Multi-task and divide their efforts to more than one thing, and putting their efforts behind something most admit will go nowhere is a disservice. I will not personally attack you, we are on the same side, but don't make me to be the enemy because I do not agree with what you do! Good luck and peace!
