This will probably shake things up in the Ukrainian situation:
A Malaysian passenger plane with 295 people on board has been shot down as it flew above eastern Ukraine, according to aviation sources.
The plane, which is believed to have been flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, was travelling at an altitude of 10km (6.2 miles) when it was shot down, Russia's Inferfax reported.
It was brought down by a ground-to-air missile, an adviser to the Ukrainian interior ministry quoted by the news agency said.

Remember, this is breaking news and the situation is fluid. No telling who shot it down at this point. It may not have even been shot down as is currently being reported.

It appears that a plane has crashed and people have died, though. That's always a horrible thing. The cause of that crash, however, appears to be unknown at this time.

Not terribly difficult to figure out what happened.

That's always my habit in situations like this. I'm sure we'll hear more about this.

You need to be cautious and take initial reports with a grain of salt as the facts are unclear and many falsehoods are reported in the first hours and even days after the event.

(14,971 posts)A source in Ukraine's National Security Council confirmed to Mashable's Chris Miller that the plane was downed.
Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko called for the creation of a government commission along with the ICAO (Ukrainian Aviation Security Training Centre) and other international organizations to investigate the tragedy of the Malaysian Airlines passenger plane.
Today, at approximately 4:20 p.m. Malaysian Airlines No. 17, which was flying the route from Amsterdam - Kuala - Lumpur, disappeared from radar screens.
In recent days, this is the third tragic accident, after the AN-26 and SU-25 aircrafts of the Armed Forces of Ukraine were shot down from the Russian territory. We do not exclude that this aircraft was also shot down, and stress that the Armed Forces of Ukraine did not commit any actions in the air [at the time of the downing].

If this is true, the Ukrainian conflict just changed in a severe and scary way. Citizens of NATO nations would have been killed on that plane.

Edit: I do not want military action, but I think it's getting to the point where it's heading that way.

(15,429 posts)CNN is reporting that the Ukriainian Secret Service are prepared to release a tape of what they claim is a telephone conversation between separatists and Russians on the other side of the border describing the attack on the aircraft and, during the conversation, it is reported that instead of a military aircraft they have shot down a jetliner.
Take with appropriate levels of salt as this is a nation's spy agency making the claim during a time of war.
