Ukraine Separatists Yield, Allowing Bodies to Depart and Agreeing to Hand Over Black Boxes

KIEV, Ukraine — After days of obstruction, Russia-backed separatists in eastern Ukraine reached an agreement with Malaysia on Monday to surrender the flight recorder boxes of the Malaysia Airlines jetliner downed by a surface-to-air missile last week, and allowed the bodies of the victims to be evacuated by train.

The agreement, announced by the prime minister of Malaysia, Najib Razak, in a live television broadcast, appeared to represent a significant movement to end the standoff over the aftermath of the crash of Flight 17 from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, which killed 298 people whose bodies lay for days in a wheat field in eastern Ukraine, an area controlled by the separatists.

The refusal of the separatists to permit unfettered access to the crash site has raised suspicions that they were responsible for the missile strike that felled the plane. It has also generated enormous international criticism of the Ukrainian separatists and of President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia.

They all--including those in the Donbas--speak it with a S. Russian accent.

It's mercilessly mocked in Moscow. Takes a little getting used to, if you're a foreigner.

As for the uniforms, that's fairly meaningless, to be honest. The only reason I think of them as Ukrainian government emergency workers is because the Ukr government says they were. Otherwise they might well have "sworn allegiance" to the DPR or simply be collecting government wages while taking DPR orders. The situation is really quite complicated if you're a government worker in DPR territory. Most of the police are paid out of Kiev or by the "official" government, even though they escort the DPR leadership and troops around town. (It's after the town falls that the government goes in and figures out what's up: Were the police just doing their jobs, were they so-so supporters and doing what was necessary, or were they active supporters and even fighters?)

The rebels said they'd be turning the black boxes over to the Malaysian delegation. That pretty much says who's had them for a while, whatever the obfuscation was.

Not seen any videos but then I have no faith in Kiev's past Youtube fabrications / scams nor those of others come to that.

There is apparently one particular video concerning this subject which may well now be deleted by Kiev.

What's most important now will be that Malaysia doesn't allow them into the hands of others outside of that state other than for closely obverved on the spot inspection.
