(10,650 posts)The comments section there was good too! A lot of "no, so-and-so was a better guitarist" arguments.

(31,493 posts)I would think by now he would have moved on to other more advanced scales and modes. Might have even worked on some speed too. Many others have gone way passed what he could do.

(10,650 posts)Of course others went beyond him. You have to judge Hendrix for his work with respect to his contemporaries and his influence after he was gone. To make an extreme example, it's almost like saying Einstein was OK, but others have gone way past what he could do.
First, if you think Hendrix just played pentatonic, you haven't played a lot of Hendrix. Hendrix influenced a lot of artists to go beyond what he did both as far as creativity in the studio and the approach to songs. He speed was fast enough for the material he played. Blues rock isn't the best vehicle for speed playing or for odd scales.
It is of course totally subjective in the end. You've got your opinion, I've got mine.

(41,999 posts)He plays pretty good blues and rock for his age, but he's going through that "Hendricks was overrated phase"--in his case it part youthful arrogance and part ignorance, but I want him to keep an open mind with his music
(of course he thinks he's gong to be a Rock Star, good thing his mom made him have a back up plan)

(31,493 posts)until I realized the limitations of using ones thumb. Vinny Moore Hot Licks video accurate picking scales and modes changed my guitar style perm. Now I've gone much farther than most players ...especially pentatonic players who will always be limited. I'll give credit to Hendrix for his new mix and use of feedback for sustain. Do yourself a favor buy a Monster Modes and Scales book.

(1,621 posts)There is more to music than just chops, but the argument that there is beauty in simplicity has devolved into all music has to be simple all the time. I started with classical guitar which provided a foundation for learning anything else. As a listener of music, I want to hear licks that are complex enough to make me wonder how they are played, then take a shot at playing them.
I play some blues and sometimes the perfect note is one simple long held bend, but I find that the beauty of simplicity is lost when that's all there is. In terms of pure technique I would say that Yngwie Malmsteen is in rare company, but a lot of times I would rather hear some Hendrix. There is creativity and some chops to enjoy, maybe not unsurpassed by other players but suited to my tastes.

(4,012 posts)Exotic scales and speed are nice, but music is art. Jimi was an artist as much a guitarist.

(1,855 posts)Speed cannot replace heart, feel and creativity, and that is why Hendrix will always be one of the all-time greatest.

(16,178 posts)is that Hendriz, Paige, Clapton,Santana and a bunch of other guitarists were great in the 60s. Geez, and they did that using both Fenders and Gibsons.
there was no computer assistance back then.

(1,621 posts)Every other American Masters program was aired over and over, I saw the one on Johnny Carson 4 times. The Jimi Hendrix episode played once. Since I don't have the internet speed to watch videos I guess I'll have to break down and buy the DVD from PBS.
