Was there this much controversy when the movie Exit to Eden came out?

That was an Ann Rice book, and the movie came out in 1992. But the roles were reversed from 50 Shades of Grey.

In that movie, the woman (Dana Delany) was the dominant, and the man (some Ausie, I don't remember) was the submissive, who was tied up, blindfolded and beaten. I just asking, because I don't remember, as I was just a kid. Was that movie controversial?

No, and like "Tie Me Up, Tie Me Down" it poked fun at itself. Warpy Jul 2014 #5

and it was erotic fiction that had a niche following, as so much BDSM fiction is crap. The movie was a comedy that wasn't very funny, had almost nothing to do with the book and the reason there wasn't any controversy is because nobody saw the movie. 50 Shades of Beige is, for whatever reason, popular, and the movie won't have Dan Akroyd playing a detective. Or, at least, one would hope this to be true. But the expectation is that this will be a movie people will pay to see, it has sex in it and so, controversy.

From the preview, that's the last thing "50 Shades" is capable of. It comes of as a heavy handed BD/SM recruitment film.

For that reason, I'm giggling at the notion it's going to be a date movie.
