What do folks recommend as good erotica? Either in film or novel form?
I've long enjoyed the works of Selena Kitt in her writings, but there's enough stuff to make people squick in there that I don't recommend it regularly. Same with the movie Secretary, though it's definitely lead to some great discussions.
I've been reading erotica of all sorts since a teen and continue to do so well into my adulthood since you can find great things to read with your partner (hell, the old penthouse letters could do that too!) and it can lead to some great exploring.
So rather than the constant beatdown that Fifty Shades is (so rightly) getting, how about some positive material recommendations?

(12,151 posts)Never tried porn OR erotica, for that matter, but these people are cleaning up self-publishing e-books for Amazon. Bigfoot porn, dinosaur porn, monster porn. The titles kill me. "Ravaged by the Raptor," etc. Virginia Wade told Forbes or someone that she's raking in $30,000 a month writing that Bigfoot stuff.
"Choked by the Chupacabra?" "Licked by the Loch Ness Monster?"
It would have to be funny though. Don't see how anyone writes those with a straight face.

(6,399 posts)I don't think we'll get much in the way of recommendations here, which is unfortunate. I'd love to get some new recs outside of the usual audience.

(25,554 posts)The unedited diaries of Anais Nin and her relationship with Henry and June Miller. I loved the movie version. So sensual, REAL sensuality. Please see it! Music is great. The first time I saw "Nine and 1/2 Weeks" it made me sad, but now I appreciate the great visuals, the 80s New York art scene, music, clothes, and Kim Bassinger's beauty.
Blue_Adept
(6,399 posts)But I didn't read the book. Nine and 1/2 weeks is interesting as well, especially as you say with the visuals. I adore Wild Orchid for its mix of visuals and music and still revisit it as a great piece of filmed mainstream erotica.

(11,833 posts)A laugh here, a sigh there. I felt I'd found friends who shared similar political, social and cultural beliefs. What a relief. What joy. Over time I read more. One day in a fit of curiosity I mustered the courage to join DU and begin posting. Most were very nice. They warned me to go slow. Take it easy. Establish some credibility. I heeded their advice. A nice comment here, a rah rah there. This proceeded for about a year. As I built up my post count, so I built up confidence and trust. Gradually, inexorably, I became immersed. Speed-reading threads. Giving and receiving abuse. Getting beat up for deviating from the norm. I can't say I enjoyed it. But it was impossible to stop. It was like a train wreck. Too often, I was the train....

(14,733 posts)I really can't stand most of her stuff. She took the most racy stuff and made it some of the most boring things I've ever read in the 'Beauty' books. Ditto most of the 'Vampire' books. 'The Mummy' was probably the only thing of hers I've read that was consistently well written.

(94,624 posts)...particularly her "Seacoast Society" books. BDSN-themed, but a lot more relationship-based character development.

(6,399 posts)The character side is what makes everything else work, so have some good development and story is what I look for.

(51,907 posts)--that is it just about impossible to recommend any erotica that will get universal approval.
Blue_Adept
(6,399 posts)Just suggestions, which can work for some but not others. There's so much focus on the awful, why not a little discussion/recommendations on what's actually good?

(11,833 posts)I prefer the super old school books like Autobiography of a Flea. Old school movies like The Opening of Misty Beethoven. Just as an example, from those you can go off on digressions into Victorian literature and golden age classic porn that are very well-covered on the net. Google and Bing are your friend. There's lots of tumblir sites that have erotic images & movies. Reddit probably has some good subthreads. Amazon and netflix too. There's some search engines like nudevista that focus more on hardcore but also have searches for erotica or vintage. But one person's erotica is another's outrage. Tastes vary wildly, so it's impossible to recommend a lot that will suit your tastes. Hope this helps a bit. Best of luck!

(1,767 posts)i think it's a little more explicit than that shades of gray junk but it's very well written, and has a sense of humor...

(27,129 posts)As a writer and reader of fanfic, I object to that.
Good and bad writing exists in all genres.
Yes, there is a lot of garbage in the fanfic world, as it is a genre largely populated by amateurs, but that doesn't mean that great fanfic doesn't exist.
Blue_Adept
(6,399 posts)Yeah, I could have phrased it differently. But I was going with what the general dialogue about it was.
But like everything else, there's an awful lot of trash. And the original fanfic work that she wrote is awful garbage.
I've only had a couple of fanfics over the years that I've stuck with - and largely continuations of anime series at that - but I'm definitely aware of the culture and some of the great works that it does.

(27,129 posts)On the positive side, it is a genre that does welcome and nurture new writers.
I know that my own writing has improved tremendously since I began to write FF.
In the "FSOG" case, I confess I haven't read it. I don't plan on ever reading it simply because of its "Twilight" roots.
Anything that has sparkly vampires as source material is not something I can take seriously.
As a fanfic reader I'm sure you're familiar with the term "crack."
I don't read or write "crack," so Twilight is a non-starter with me.

(6,399 posts)One of the first things you learn as a writer is write what you know. and fans heavily invested in a show, book or property tend to be really into it. It's a great way to step into the world of writing and find your own voice afterward.
