Cantor to Resign From Congress

Rep. Eric Cantor will resign from Congress effective Aug. 18, he said in an interview with the Richmond Times-Dispatch posted at midnight.

The Virginia Republican, newly deposed as House majority leader after losing his primary to Dave Brat, said he has asked Gov. Terry McAuliffe to call a special election on Nov. 4, ensuring that the district will be represented in the lame duck.

“I want to make sure that the constituents in the 7th District will have a voice in what will be a very consequential lame-duck session,” Cantor told his hometown newspaper. Cantor said that will also give his replacement additional seniority in the next Congress.

Cantor did not reveal what he plans to do after Congress.

Brat is set to face off against Democrat Jack Trammell in a race that is rated Safe Republican by the Rothenberg Political Report/Roll Call

1. Can McAuliffe forgo a special election?

If I was McAuliffe, and it was within my legal power to do so, I would let the regular election for Cantor's seat go forward. No special election.

Hoist Cantor on his own petard.

3. Political. By resigning, his successor is guaranteed greater seniority (hence, power) . . .

In a sense, this is in the best interest of his constituents (though I have long believed we would all be better served if Cantor wasn't around).

I just have a hard time believing he's doing something altruistic.

5. He's not. He's doing something political. Others will benefit, including his constituents. . .

but I'm certain Cantor is cutting deals and organizing his own future with far greater intent than he is looking out for other people. But as with most things political, many people may benefit from Cantor's decision (some outside Cantor's own circle, too).

6. Questions....Does he have a job lined up where he needs to have his "separation time"

all finished up, like, say, a lobbying job where they want him doing the work ASAP?

Does he have another candidate in mind, someone who will run for the interim seat and then maybe run as a write-in or find some way to wrest the sure victory from his nemesis???

Something fishy is going on here...he's forcing Brat to run again; maybe he wants to poison the well there?

...he should serve out he final months of his term, not forego them to immediately hop onto whatever cash-in opportunity he has lined up.
