http://www.alternet.org/tea-party-and-right/rand-paul-cant-escape-neo-confederate-friends-he-runs-presidentRand Paul, the U.S. Senator and 2016 Republican presidential candidate, keeps crossing paths with his notorious political soul mate, Jack Hunter, who ghost-wrote Pauls 2011 book but resigned from his Senate staff last July after his past as a neo-Confederate blogger who praised Abraham Lincolns killerand called for African-American filmmaker Spike Lee to be whippedcaught up with him.
On Wednesday night, Paul gave the keynote address to the Young Americans For Liberty 2014 convention in Washington. The Libertarian group, which once hired Hunterwho had blogged as The Southern Avenger and was known for wearing a Confederate flag facemaskis having him Hunter for a Friday morning talk, entitled, You Cant Be A Conservative Without Being A Libertarian.
As Kentucky civil rights pioneer Georgia David Powers told AlterNet this week, Paul has a long history of voting against the interests of African-Americans, despite recent efforts to recast himself as a racial justice crusader. A leopard does not change its spots, Powers said, adding that Paul has surrounded himself with white supremacists for years.
That brings us back to Hunter, who wasnt just another southerner venting that the wrong side won the Civil War. Thanks to the Internet Archive Wayback Machine, you can read what he wrote in 2005 for the Charleston City Paper, where he relished the persona that he created of a Confederate-flag-masked pundit seeking to offend Yankee sensibilities.

(5,082 posts)Dont be so shortsighted to think he can't win if he peels off anti-NSA and anti-DrugWar votes which is where the majority of public opinion is. Potential Democrat nominees need to take a believable stance promising to end the Drug War and reign in NSA. Most of what NSA is doing now is legwork for drug enforcement anyway. Let them do what they were chartered to do.

(5,082 posts)Youre going to base strategy on past probabilities? In 2008 name one Black person of any profession that became President. You may be good working statistics or accounting but I wouldn't make you my campaign manager.

(4,835 posts)and Obama wouldn't have won if he were a republican. He didn't win despite being black, he won because he's a democrat. The democrats elect senators (JFK and Obama). Kerry actually won.
Kerry said it best "I was for it, before I was against it." That's the reality of congress, and democrats understand the reality of congress, republicans don't.
I'm not applying to be your campaign manager, but when Hillary was being interviewed - she was asked what she thought about Rand Paul attacking her family personally and her response was "as long as he understands that it opens the door for personal attacks on him." They will tear his ass up if he's put out front.
Rand Paul hasn't accomplished anything in the senate and his dad never accomplished anything in the house. Look up Ron Paul's legislative accomplishments some time - he doesn't play well with others.
I'll be shocked if Rand gets through the first couple of primaries. You can quote me on that.
Christie has a better chance despite his moronic mistakes. Republicans will run another (or the same) governor.

(5,082 posts)And the current situation is very fluid and dynamic. Expect surprises.

(4,835 posts)but Rand Paul isn't going to get anywhere near the White House.
The big money donors aren't behind him, his skeletons haven't been let out of the closet and this 'creating his own medical board' thing hasn't been fully aired (obviously, without looking it up I can't even accurately describe it - so it hasn't hit the mainstream).
I don't know why you think Rand Paul is a viable candidate, but he won't survive the republican attacks - let alone the democrat attacks.
That's just my prediction, but it will be interesting to watch.

(5,082 posts)He's found issues both sides agree on but the media and insiders have blocked out. Many if those who sit on the boards of Big Media also sit on the boards of Big Pharma, Big Ag, the Miitary Industrial Complex, and the Surveillance State Prison industries. It's a scam.

(4,835 posts)Perhaps you should abandon DU and go to some place where it is appropriate to worship Rand Paul.
He's a tea party darling and the tea party is a scam. Perhaps you missed the results of the republican mid-terms. Fox News sings the praises of the tea party, but as a movement that gets candidates elected - that ship has sailed.
It might seem like a lot of people like Ted Cruz and Rand Paul because they are always being treated seriously on the TV. It isn't going to translate into votes.
Mark my words - the republican presidential candidate in 2016 will be a governor. The big money folks are probably grooming someone now. Probably Jeb.

(5,082 posts)I should join Republicans if I can't stand centrists who have ruined our party and pushed it to the right? Get over yourself. I'm merely pointing out that Rand shouldn't be allowed to STEAL liberal votes. Your argument that Dem senators can't get elected is weak. Things change. 2008 case in point.

(4,835 posts)I said dem senators can get elected (JFK and Obama). It is republican senators that can't get elected to the White House.
The only vote I see Rand walking away with around here is your vote. The function of the senate is too complex for a senator to defend to the conservative masses.
Rand has tried to rebrand himself in the past few months. It won't work in the long run. Once he faces a little scrutiny - he will appeal even less to the tea partiers that he's appealing to now.
He isn't worth worrying about.
billhicks76
(5,082 posts)Infering I would vote for Rand just because I see your argument as faulty is egotistical. Try not to make things personal. I see Rand stealing votes both from independents in the primary and the general election because I do not believe the old rules will apply in 2016.

I have a better chance of being the Republican nominee than Rand Aqua Buddha Paul.

(5,082 posts)I believe you are making a major miscalculation. His biggest fear should be the military/surveillance industrial complex...not Republican party cliques.
