Senate blocks aid to Israel

By BURGESS EVERETT | 7/31/14 8:46 PM EDT

In the end, the Senate couldn’t even agree to deliver emergency aid to one of the United States’ closest allies.

A last-ditch effort to deliver aid to Israel during its war with Hamas died on the Senate floor, as Republicans blocked the proposal over concerns that it would increase the debt.

After Senate Republicans blocked Democrats’ $2.7 billion border aid package, which also included $225 million for Israel’s Iron Dome missile defense system and $615 million to fight Western wildfires, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid tried to split off the Israel and wildfire money as a standalone bill, hoping to put aside the dispute over border funding and appeal to Republicans’ deep ties to Israel.

The stumble on delivering $225 million for Israel’s Iron Dome missile defense system, which is used to shoot down rockets aimed at Israel, infuriated GOP hawks who’d been pushing Reid to break the Israel funding from the border bill.

“It’s an important moment for the Senate and the House to show support for Israel. All I can say that if you don’t see the need to come to Israel’s aid now, and the message that it would send now, it would be a big mistake,” said Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.). “Any person who thinks that the Iron Dome is unnecessary needs to go to the floor and tell us why, why we don’t need to help Israel right now. They’re asking for our help, they’re our best friend in the region, one of our best friends in the world. “

If they want to send war money to Israel, then cut our military funding by the same amount. Deficit neutral.

I wondered if they were going to fillibuster this because of the so-called adding to the debt issue. Of course, they had no problem adding hundreds of billions in unpaid tax breaks in previously passed efforts this year.

the means to defend themselves from Israel's bombs and bullets?

I'm glad it didn't pass, regardless of the reasons, although it would be far better to simply cut off financial aid to any state that is using it to kill other human beings.

Now, I'm a peacenik and wish we weren't sending anyone money for weapons.

However, maybe if we were fairer and more honest, we would send the Palestinians money for their self-defense so that they wouldn't feel the need to turn to an odious group like Hamas for protection.

The indigenous Palestinian Arabs in 'Israel' have a right to resist oppression and the confiscation of their lands by the Israeli government -- maybe a bit of military aid to them from the U.S. might cause the Israelis to be more prudent in their use of force.

So, in this case, I'm glad, too, that this money is not being approved.

dead NO on issues as our veterans needing help for years and they just passed a bill helping veterans, when we have refugees coming across our borders, WTH. When did Graham become a great bleeding heart, oh, I see, on this one issue. This congress has reduced assistance to our poor and hungry, attempts of passing infrastructure bills has fallen on deaf ears of Republicans and the ACA has been fought all the way and they are still fighting healthcare Americans needs, give me a break.

although in this case, as a humanitarian, I am glad this bill is blocked.

Diplomacy, people. I don't see any winners in this situation and really hope we can come up with something (I'm still for a 2-state solution) to stop the constant battles between these 2 groups of humans.

Just hours after the White House condemned the shelling of a U.N. school in Gaza, the Pentagon confirmed it was providing Israel with fresh supplies of ammunition, including mortar rounds for tanks and ammunition for grenade launchers. Meanwhile, members of Congress are working to supply hundreds of millions of dollars in additional funding for Israel’s "Iron Dome" missile shield. While U.S. news anchors, pundits and politicians have repeatedly extolled the efficacy of the Iron Dome in deflecting rocket attacks, the acclaimed physicist Theodore Postol says there is no evidence Iron Dome is actually working. He estimates the Iron Dome, which is partially built by Raytheon, intercepts just 5 percent of rockets fired at Israel. A professor of science, technology and national security policy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Postol is an expert in missiles, missile defenses and other aspects of modern warfare.

Raytheon no doubt salivating to help deliver the goods.

msm. I read a similar article from an israeli scientist saying the same thing..I'll see if i can find it..I decided this morning that this is psychological warfare on the entire world..we are being asked to support psychopaths and a psychopathic agenda which is the antithesis of humanity. I am stunned and so deeply ashamed that we are supporting this horror in any way. I can get up and walk away from my computer and the knot in my stomach goes away for a minute. I cannot begin to understand why any civilized person would support this. There will be consequences which we cannot even imagine yet.

Sounds to me like Israel doesn't need any help right now. Unless maybe Lindsay would like us to drop a few MOABs on Gaza City to help speed up the urban clearing project already in progress.

meanwhile, the biggest wildfire in Washington state history flames on, more than 300 homes burned to the ground. A million acres of land torched in just Washington and Oregon this month as firefighters in Western states struggle to manage 27 huge fires.
