Source: Where do they get the number of 97% of climate scientists' concensus on change?

Last edited Fri Aug 1, 2014, 12:09 PM - Edit history (1)

It’s good to have this source book-marked for discussions with those who aren’t sure man-made climate change is real..

The percentage, 97%, is reported by NASA at:

http://climate.nasa.gov/scientific-consensus/ (ftnt)

The implications of this level of consensus is staggering and should easily convince all but the delusional and/or co-opted. Here is the short and simple observation I make and it is stunningly effective:

Getting 97% consensus of the general adult population on any matter, much less a controversial one, is nearly impossible. (Perhaps on the existence of gravity or the idea that the earth circles the sun, or . . .) But this 97% is a specialized population, professional scientists, many of whom dedicated themselves to the discovery of truth in their teens. The odds of getting 97% of such dedicated professionals to agree to a falsehood (and fudge their research to support it) simply for tenure or to secure grants are slimmer than the changes of winning Mega-Millions!!!!

Then I ask something like, "What sane individual would stake the future of our species on such a long-shot?"

*******************************************************************

(ftnt) The high percentage is not based on heresy or ideology but on three articles in reputable scientific journals:

W. R. L. Anderegg, “Expert Credibility in Climate Change,” Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences Vol. 107 No. 27, 12107-12109 (21 June 2010); DOI: 10.1073/pnas.1003187107.

P. T. Doran & M. K. Zimmerman, "Examining the Scientific Consensus on Climate Change," Eos Transactions American Geophysical Union Vol. 90 Issue 3 (2009), 22; DOI: 10.1029/2009EO030002.

N. Oreskes, “Beyond the Ivory Tower: The Scientific Consensus on Climate Change,” Science Vol. 306 no. 5702, p. 1686 (3 December 2004); DOI: 10.1126/science.1103618.

This site also includes the encapsulated positions of eighteen scientific societies, unions, associations, and academies, as well as one governmental agency and intergovernmental body.

Indeed, the site is one of the best places to send critics of the scientific consensus.

Except for maybe 3% of the entire human population who are idiots.

So when you tell someone the oceans are warming and they don't agree, you know you are talking to an idiot and you should just say good-bye.

The consensus from the scientists is that the oceans are warming due to humans' pollution. Given that no one is going to stop polluting until they are years past dead and burned up, or buried, or whatever, the increase in ocean heat is a 97% certainty.

You're right. Many of the climate change deniers are supported the petroleum industry. The Heartland Institute (which is supported by Exxon and others) even created the NIPCC (The Non-Governmental International Panel on Climate Change) to try to discredit the UN’s highly reputable IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change).

The following link is a good resource on climate change deniers and their backers put together by Media Matters:

attack science and scientists!

Reason and science only influence a conservative in cases where they can produce a profit or increase power. Outside of that, conservatives ignore or attack reason and science.

"Yes, the planet is warming, but that is normal in geological times. There is no human influence at work."

This denial is much easier to defend, yet equally damaging.

And of that 97% of scientists, they are 97% sure of their conclusion that man-made global warming is both real and dangerous
