Fox News' Phony Obama Approval Rating Chart
Here's Fox News' latest example of mind numbing right wing propaganda that they are known for.

"Let's all take a minute and give Roger Ailes a quick math lesson. One plus one equals two. Three plus three equals six. Now we can continue.
Fox News has a history of posting bogus charts and graphs to make a poll or study appear to be much worse for a democratic politician and I am at for loss of words to describe their latest mind-numbing example of right wing propaganda.
A Fox News segment displayed a misleading chart based on a poll that appeared to show 110 percent of Americans disapproved of President Obama's job performance.
On the July 30 edition of Special Report, the following chart was shown during a report by Fox News political correspondent Carl Cameron on Obama's popularity in the "twelve states most likely to decide Senate control...
I will say that Fox News is giving 110% in their efforts of lies and deceptions."

without digging into the actual poll numbers, one mathematically correct interpretation is "60% of poll respondents selected one of several disapproval categories, with 50% strongly disapproving."
either that or conservative viewers can't handle 2nd grade arithmetic, or maybe they just don't care.

(6,604 posts)I don't participate in polls, but if I ever do, i'll be sure to ask the pollster if any response will be included in more than one category.
While I understand your reasoning here, you have to admit this is disingenuous above and beyond looking plain stupid.
Shame that your average Fox viewer will miss the stupid. Disingenuous has too many syllables for him/her to even comprehend, sadly.

A real American is who:
- Watches FoxNews 24/7
- Thinks the first Native American was Virginia Dare
- Hates Obama and thinks all black males were born in Kenya
- Can't be bothered with facts like 2 + 2 = 4.

(8,964 posts)Just add House disapproval, Senate disapproval, Tea Party faction disapproval, GOP establishment disapproval, and what the heck just to maintain a level playing field throw in Democratic disapproval as well. Then repeat questions for "strongly" disapprove for each of these. President Obama's detractors would have their work cut out for themselves trying to match those numbers.

Tab
(11,093 posts)In some skewed poll, 60% disagreed (although I question that, but depending on see how the poll was worded...), 50% also checked off "strongly disagree", which might be not unreasonable (although I question that too - I think the actual number is about 30%), and it's unfair to double-count the population in tallying the result, but that didn't stop Fox, but positive matter (40%) consumes less weight than 60% of dark matter, and certainly more than 50% of dark-dark matter.
I think the real equation is:
Start with:
60% for
10% lightly against
30% strongly against
Then adjust for light/dark matter, and bubble-headed weight, and...
damn. High school math was so long ago. But I'm sure it works out somehow that 60% positive + 40% (comprised of 60% of light-negative - 50% of dark negative) adds up to 100%.
I'm too tired tonight but I'll bet 100% they're talking out of their assets.

(94,598 posts)...unless someone can point to the narrative that went along with the graphics that said differently.
What is said was: 60% disapprove of the President's performance, of which 50% strongly disapprove.
(FWIW - Democracy Corps is a Democratic-leaning polling outfit.)
AlbertCat
(17,505 posts)It IS what it says.... the graphic says simply that 60% disapprove and 50% strongly disapprove.
There is no explanation of subsets of any kind.
YOU are adding the relevant elements that make that graphic make sense, and checking the initial data shows your assumptions were correct.
But the graphic itself does not contain ANY info that supports your assumptions.
It was done deliberately to make the info look even more damaging that it actually is.... but with a "plausible denial" factor built in in case someone notices the graphic makes no sense.
It's called propaganda and misinformation. Fox News does it too many time for it to just be a boo-boo.

(17,505 posts)Except...it was on purpose....
They do it too many times for it to be just a mistake.
So it's not "sloppy" but intended and it is biased because it's purpose is to make things look worse than they are.
It is indeed still stupid.

(52,253 posts)as you can see, it's actually based on a wvwvaf (women's voices, women's vote action fund) poll, showing 50% strongly disapproving and 10% disapproving not strongly for a total of 60% total disapproving.
note that this is only in "battleground" states
there are other potential methodology problems given that 81% white seems high and 9% under 30 seems low.
of course the faux presentation is makes it look worse by not showing the approval side, though the numbers look bad any way you present them.

Though yeah, I completely agree that they are complete and utter liars.
Sadly, I don't think they meant it that way. So, yep, their math is off.
