Even if the President supports him, we need to see evidence that our government is serious about obeying international law and the laws of our nation. We need to see someone held accountable.
Although we know that the Bush Administration tortured prisoners they had captured during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. However, we expected this administration to correct the problem. It is not enough to say that "we have full confidence". We want to see evidence that something is being done about it? Is that too much for any citizen to ask?

(17,380 posts)If you want him gone, that should be the real target.
Senate Democrats can make noise, but can no more depose him than House Republicans who hate Holder.

(30,439 posts)of a Dem Senator calling on him to resign, but I can't recall which Senator it was.
How exactly was Brennan involved in the hacking of Senate computers and how much knowledge did he have of the operation?
If he was directly involved or had knowledge of the operation, then he should be fired IMO.

Just asking?
Because that is what the right-wing will ask if this is pursued?
But why would the President defend Brennan as if it was nothing more serious than jaywalking?

(53,035 posts)You ask if the President knew, and then add a smiley icon, like the idea of it makes you happy. And you think the Democratic Senate is supposed to care what you think? We have a presidential election in two years. You can wait until then.

(111,103 posts)But I do want to see those held accountable that spied upon and stole the files of the Senate Committee that was investigating them. I cannot understand why the President would be so supportive of such actions. Maybe he wants the Senate to do its job?

(53,035 posts)I don't have cable and my TV isn't hooked up, so I need to find a transcript or video of it. However, I'm having trouble understanding why some here are so much more concerned about the Senate than the rest of the country or everything else the CIA does and has done, including overthrowing governments in places like Chile and Guatemala and assisting in the slaughter of hundreds of thousands of people around the world. I see this described as unparalleled violation of the constitution. I don't know if people are entirely unfamiliar with the CIA and its history or if this is just another opportunity to show contempt for a President many here have repeatedly indicated they see worse than any other in terms of selling out to "corporatists," "authoritarianism," and everything else.
So I'll need to see the transcript myself before I believe that he "supported the spying."

(111,103 posts)He is "supporting the spying" by saying that he has "full confidence" in those that admitted spying. Some of us expected more from him.

(53,035 posts)or in the history of the CiA, I fail to see why this one matters so much. But then again, I don't see Senators as more important than anyone else in the country or the planet. I keep forgetting how much more important people with money and privilege are than the rest of us. I will try to remember that a Senator's privacy is worth more than the privacy of ordinary Americans and more than the lives of 200,000 Guatemalans. It is silly of me to keep forgetting that. Nevermind. You'll soon have a President that gets back to business as usual and all will be well.
Not exactly a shock he didn't say what you claimed.

(50,130 posts)Even though my senator Ron Wyden has been a stalwart force against the surveillance state, his latest statement rings cold: he wants an apology from Brennan.
Not good enough.
Brennan must be fired.
It's time for massive outpouring of contact to Udall and Wyden.

(47,953 posts)Senators can muck things up, even individual ones. We saw this last week with Cruz holding up nominees because he wanted to grandstand. Presumably Democratic senators can muck things up too, if 3-4 of them decided to not support any nominees for any executive branch positions until Brennan was fired that would be real pressure.
They have the power, will they use it.

(84,711 posts)because it was tied to the "Immigration Reform Bill" and other things were tacked on to it and Senate would leave without giving the money to Israel for "Iron Dome."
But, haven't heard any more about it.. Did the Senate not vote and leave or did they stay and do the "Clean Up" of the Bill and it is a "Done Deal" ...but Harry Reid tried to tell us it wouldn't be passed ...until it was...because he was feeling Heat about it?
Anyway...I hope the Senate refused to vote on it because the RW Repugs messed it up and that Israel didn't get that particular bit of funding.

(47,953 posts)Israel won't be denied anything. I think the only hope for controlling the CIA is if they piss Israel off and AIPAC demands Brennan's resignation. If that happened he would be gone within a day.
Meanwhile, money for US emergencies like wildfires and immigrant children is nowhere to be found. Not essential, I guess.

(84,711 posts)I figured there would be some last minute Friday vote....but still hoped they wouldn't do it. It might have sent a message for Israel to get into serious negotiations about Gaza. But...not to be...
