(58,378 posts)This situation is "unprecedented," says top Weather Channel meteorologist Kevin Roth, who notes that in 1982the closest analogytwo weak tropical storms arrived in Hawaii separated by 10 days. Adds Jeff Masters of Weather Underground:
It's been a very active hurricane season in the Eastern Pacific, which has seen 10 named storms, 4 hurricanes, and 3 intense hurricanes so far in 2014. On average, we expect to see 6 named storms, 3 hurricanes, and 1 intense hurricane by August 4 in the Eastern Pacific.
Thanks for the thread, lovuian.

Talking about Hawaii here/AKA/The Big Island..

"CNN) -- Tropical cyclones in the Pacific do not worry some Hawaiian residents because direct hits historically have been so rare on the islands. Hawaii is a small target in a large ocean.
But the state finds itself prepping ahead of what could be a pair of back-to-back smacks from Hurricane Iselle and Tropical Storm Julio.
Even if these two storms weaken or don't make landfall -- as is usually the case around Hawaii -- they can still cause damage, including flooding and debris, experts warn."
"People are not really nervous, but honestly just hoping for some good surf," said Murray, who owns the Hilo Surfboard Company. "Surfers get excited when hurricane season starts. The people here are really nonchalant and are used to rain, which is the main thing we are expecting."
snip//
"..There are no lines at the supermarket or stocking of supplies, even though Iselle is on a forecast track to hit the islands on Thursday."
"I'm not worried about this storm," Murray said.
snip//
"A primer on Hurricane in Hawaii by the University of Hawaii says just as much: "Hurricanes are relatively rare events in the Hawaiian islands."

That last paragraph cracks me up.. it's like they can't remember back 22 years ago when the really big one hit Kaua'i on 9/11/92. We do.. I can report that most of the food, water, & batteries around here are Off the shelves.. After Iniki in 1992.. Kauaians aren't taking any chances..

(12,894 posts)My grandparents lived in Galveston and as a kid, me and my sister would spend summers there. I guess that is why I've always found hurricanes fascinating-although, respectful of them knowing how "tempermental" they can be!
With that said, this caught my eye early on because of the direction it is coming from--and another one following! Are there seawalls? I will keep you and the islands in my thoughts and prayers. Be safe and keep us posted!

(297,425 posts)"I don't know if it is related to global warming, but it is quite unusual for two hurricanes to follow the same track just days apart. The one-two punch would be unprecedented in the era of satellite hurricane tracking, said Kevin Roth, a meteorologist for The Weather Channel. One thing is certain, hurricanes feed of the energy of warm ocean surfaces. Global warming will only make them more frequent and stronger."

And, this..
"Two big storms so close together is rare in the eastern Pacific, and Hurricane Iselle could hit by Friday and Tropical Storm Julio could hit two or three days later, weather officials said."

(297,425 posts)As Hawaii braced Thursday for two hurricanes -- which would be the first to hit the state in 22 years -- a magnitude 4.5 earthquake shook Waimea on the eastern shore of the Big Island, according to the U.S. Geological Survey..
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said some areas may have experienced shaking, but no tsunami was expected. The earthquake hit at a depth of 7.9 miles.
There were no reports of damage from the 6:24 a.m. temblor, but the news heightened the concerns of island residents, who have been stocking up on food and water in anticipation of the approaching storms

The food, water, and batteries have been flying off the shelves here on Kaua'i.. seems most people have a good memory of 9/11/92 and Hurricane Iniki.. and not taking any chances!

(12,047 posts)Rare twin Category 1 hurricanes are nearing Hawaii as Hurricane Iselle, with 85 mph winds, and Hurricane Julio, with 75 mph winds, steam west-northwest towards the islands. Both hurricanes are expected to weaken to tropical storms before they affect Hawaii. Iselle is the bigger danger, as it is expected to make a direct hit on Thursday evening, while Julio's center is expected to pass about 100 miles to the northeast of the islands on Sunday. Satellite images show that Iselle has weakened significantly over the past day. Though the hurricane still has a prominent eye, the eyewall's heavy thunderstorms are much reduced in intensity and areal coverage, due to wind shear and dry air

(11,155 posts)Obama is President.
The first will pass over the islands as a tropical storm at the worst, the second will pass off to the north creating swells the surfers flock to.
The first is already falling apart and dry air is pumping in.
Edit: original post was silly. Stay safe, hope for the weakest storms.

(19,362 posts)A tropical storm warning was upgraded to a hurricane warning Wednesday for the Big Island, or Hawaii County, and a tropical storm warning was in effect for Maui County and Oahu.
A tropical storm watch was issued for Kauai County.
The Central Pacific Hurricane Center said late Wednesday that the center of Iselle was expected to pass very near or over the Big Island Thursday night, and pass just south of the smaller islands Friday.
Julio was located about 1,455 miles east of Hilo late Wednesday and was moving west-northwest at 16 mph.
Julio had winds of 85 mph, making it a Category 1 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale.
The Latest news is Julio is going to get stronger its moving in over warmer waters and following the same path as Iselle

Kauai and Western Islands:
Kauai took the brunt of Hawaiis last hurricane strike, Iniki, in 1992, but should have the least impacts of the major islands this time around. Still, folks on Kauai can expect up to a foot of heavy rain from Iselle alone and additional rain from Julio until Monday night. Flash floods and mudslides are nearly certain in places.
Thanks to warming seas and expected changes in atmospheric circulation patterns associated with climate change, Hawaiis hurricane threat is expected to increase in coming decades. A recent study showed this effect could send two to three times more storms Hawaiis way by the end of the century. Since Hawaiis hurricanes are so rare, such an increase might be difficult to detect, however."
