Hiroshima marks 69th anniversary of A-bombing

By TARO NAKAZAKI/ Staff Writer~Asahi Shimbum

HIROSHIMA--Touching upon the inhumane aspects of nuclear weapons, Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui called on the central government to take the initiative in working toward nuclear disarmament.

Matsui read this year's Peace Declaration on Aug. 6 in the ceremony held at the Peace Memorial Park to commemorate the 69th anniversary of the dropping of the world's first atomic bomb on Hiroshima by the United States.

In the Peace Declaration, Matsui expressed that Hiroshima would make efforts to spread the call for nuclear disarmament in the international community. He also called on the central government to continue to proceed along the path of a pacifist nation.

Matsui described the experiences of four atomic bomb survivors, including children made orphans as a result of the bomb. He called on people to act while thinking how they or their families would have felt if they were placed in the same situation as the hibakusha.

White Light/Black Rain: The Destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki

It should be required viewing by well...everyone. It gives survivors' testimonies. Just unlike any documentary I've seen.

Great documentary. It was a documentary double header for me. First I saw the Nixon on Nixon HBO documentary. That was also very good.

Thanks for sharing, yuiyoshida. It's a date that should never be forgotten. My sister turned three years old on that date while my daddy was a soldier in the Pacific War and saw the cloud. A day of infamy.
