Recently I had an exchange with a conservative where I simply told them that as long as Republicans continue to try to interject religion into our government, they can never claim to stand for Constitutional values. Our First Amendment makes it pretty clear that our government cannot pass laws based on religion. Its like Ive said before, for the words Christian, Christianity, and God to be completely omitted from our Constitution wasnt done so by accident, but by design.
But even though our First Amendment guarantees every American freedom from religious rule, Republicans constantly try to use the Bible as a reference for crafting our laws.
Take for instance Rep. Steven Palazzo (R-MS) who apparently believes that every member of Congress, even those who arent Christians, should use the Bible as a guide for decision-making.
Palazzo sent a copy of the Bible to every member of Congress with a letter that said:
On a daily basis, we contemplate policy decisions that impact Americas future. Our staffs provide us with policy memos, statistics, and recommendations that help us make informed decisions. However, I find that the best advice comes through meditating on Gods Word.
When it comes to religion, I always go back to my belief that it should just be kept private. Ive never quite understood this desire by some to want to force their views on others. If you want to believe in a particular religion, then by all means go right ahead. Just dont try to force others to believe in the same things you do.
So while Palazzos intentions might have not been malicious, I still think theres a clear underlying message hes sending to members of Congress that he believes we should be basing our government on biblical principles.
Which, thankfully, is unconstitutional.

(25,261 posts)Think about that. We (the American People) should have a fund raiser with the purpose of raising money to be able to send every member of Congress a copy of the Constitution. The message attached should say 'read this then do your job'.

And, SOME Democrat had the golden opportunity to rightfully take the high ground on the "loving the constitution" thing and fired out copies of the constitution to ever member of congress with a note, "whatever our personal beliefs, THIS was the document we swore to uphold ..."

(16,423 posts)Believing in a religion is one thing. But then rewriting the religion until it fits you financial and political needs, that's a totally different story.
And suddenly some of those holy regulations are literally and some are metaphorically.
No homos? Literal word of God. No bacon? Meh, who cares what God said.
Suddenly Jesus Christ turned from a proponent of humility and poverty into a proponent of self-enrichment.
Suddenly teachings of forgiveness and peace all get retconned and Jesus Christ is used as a symbol of oppression and warfare.

(14,566 posts)I am not a religious person, but I grew up in a somewhat conservative setting and was exposed to the bible, prayed before each meal and attended services every Sunday until I graduated from high school in the 70s and early 80s.
What I learned about Christianity is nothing like what these assholes spew - it was about giving and accepting.
That turn was starting around me while I was exposed to it and the "Religious Right" thing started growing to advance this perverse hate gays thing ...

(67,112 posts)being used as a political propaganda tool to warp the minds of many well meaning but gullible individuals. It is so damn distressing and depressing ... just why so many Americans are such damn fools they can't comprehend what is going on in this country, the endless brainwashing. The political hucksters thump the bible and wave the flag, both with their warped propagandistic interpretations to push forward their agendas sometime bordering on lunacy.

Mix religion and government and you will get some strange scary ass intolerant government. Look no further than the Arab world for proof of that

(18,124 posts)that's part of the problem with this country. RW religious NUTS thinking they have the inside track on right thinking and all they have is stupidity and ignorance. I agree with poster, religion should be a private affair of the heart and mind to nourish the spirit and kept the fuck out of our political affairs.

(12,394 posts)Lots of good stuff in the Bible:
Be your brother's keeper.
Give to the poor.
Love thy neighbor.
Don't bear false witness.
Etc. etc.
I don't see where the Bible contradicts the constitution. A copy of both on a shelf is an excellent idea, along with many other books written for the purpose of guidance and enlightenment.
A majority of politicians could use a good Bible lesson.

- condoning slavery
- stoning disobedient children
- prohibitions against shellfish
- prohibitions against mixing fabrics
- murder
- genocide
- utter contempt for women
- and on and on and on...
If anyone likes them some bible, do it in private and keep it the fuck out the government like the founder intended from the goddamn start.
I would simply highlight those passages and ask the good congressman why they are not as ironclad as I am sure his inherent persecution of gays and women is...I'd also wonder if he had attended any good child stonings lately.
