I think it might be Mr. Takei. I completely agree with your assessment. He is one amazing guy.

that was pretty cool. But it's often head-shaking wonder to see some things and how they develop and I gotta say that supporting actors usually eventually fade away. Back then I never once felt the way about George as I do today. I never once thought he would end up being one of the most respected and loved people walking the earth.

I am so glad he did, though. I just love the guy.

your Star Trek geek status is secured on the Constellation call. The episode is memorable to me due to the way the Enterprise moves around that thing trying to destroy it.

They sold plastic model kits of the Enterprise for about 3 bucks way back when. I swear to God they must have used one in the original episode, it just looked laughably bad.

Yes, the original Constellation was an Enterprise model kit, that was kit-bashed with a lighter.

In the non-upgraded version of the original episode, when the Constellation is heading into the planet-eater's mouth, you can see the model wobble, looking like a model on a peg.

I posted the upgraded effects above.

Harlan Ellison, who wrote the original teleplay for the Star Trek: TOS episode City On The Edge Of Forever, once referred to George Takei as "the most charming man I've ever met."

I'd amend that to say: "The most charming man on the Net".

Harlan visited the bookstore I managed back in the early 1990s - the owner was a long-time acquaintance of Ellison's. Harlan is one of the most interesting, charming, infuriating and volatile people I have ever met.

I love the guy and have been following him online forever, but he posted an article to his Facebook feed earlier titled "Gay Men Draw Vaginas", or something like that. I can see the humor in it, but it's NOT COOL when you're browsing Facebook on a break at work and suddenly drawings of vaginas pop up on your screen...just as coworkers are walking by.
