Released bit by bit between Nixons death in 1994 and last August, the tapes are a trove of the nastiness and paranoia that will, unfortunately or otherwise, serve as historys most complete portrait of who Nixon really was. We may never listen to them all, but Kunhardts film is adept at picking the choicest moments.

If you have HBO and anyone under the age of 60, make them watch this, and explain to them that practically the entire modern republican and teaparty still love this guy and think JUST LIKE HIM

(33,688 posts)the tactics Nixon used in 1968 - divide, inflame resentments, pander to idiots. A perfectly straight and very short line can be drawn between Nixon's political strategy and the modern lunatic right. The trickster is the Godfather and source of politics as practiced today.

(16,286 posts)after he and his wife explained to me that the reason american Black people are such problems for our society (oops, their first mistake) is that the good ones were dropped off in Europe before our Black's made it here back when we shipped in slaves.
His mother was a lifelong friend, but after I sent him a letter explaining we were not friends anymore and to not contact me anymore, she also cut off contact.
I was surprised by her, she is a professor at the local University, very smart Woman and I had no idea she had these traits.
Like I have said elsewhere, I had to get a new dentist when mine proved he didnt believe in science by telling me climate change is bullshit.

(33,688 posts)Some years ago I worked with a woman whose husband was a specialist physician - a neurologic radiologist to be precise. Guy was a Republican doctor from a long line of Republican doctors. one night at a social gathering he told me that, speaking strictly as a physician, single-payer was by far the best option in terms of efficiency. He explained that he and his partners spent countless hours arguing with insurance companies, taking time away from their practices. His staff had to deal with mountains of paperwork - different for each insurance company. wasting more person-hours.
He concluded by telling me that he could practice better, more efficient and patient-centered medicine in a single payer system and that losses from smaller fees would be more than recouped in terms of increased efficiency.

(7,321 posts)House sitting, so I get to see HBO and saw this the other night. It was astonishing even after all these years... Now that guy (among other things) was a racists, misogynists and uber anti-semite.
It was downright creepy to listen to .

(47,547 posts)Either he was far worse than I'd remembered (which was pretty bad) or I'd forgotten what an egocentric monster he was. There was something seriously wrong with the man. He comes across more like a caricature than a real life leader. Now I know how dictators function.

(33,688 posts)with a gigantic insecurity complex. Whether he was an actual psychopath or not I am not qualified to determine. He appears to have had absolutely no conscience, however.

(73,577 posts)correctly diagnosed with several disorders; but not psychopath. He had a code of conduct -- definitely anti-social. But those who call him a psychopath merely expose their own lack of understanding of what that actually means.

(33,688 posts)sounds about right to me. I think you are correct that RMN was not a true psychopath.

He seemed to be totally incapable of joy. Even dancing with his daughter at her wedding, he looked like a programmed android. Never once saw a sincere smile or heard sincere laughter from the man. How he ever got elected to any office, let along a landslide victory, is mind-boggling to me.

(47,547 posts)him being an intolerant authoritarian figure, but I didn't picture him being so racist and hateful. His total disregard for the law was definitely worse than I remember.
Sadly, the teaparty types have always been with us.

(108,099 posts)I'm 57 so I'm barely under that age. I do remember Nixon.
And you bring up a valid point. The right is still po'ed about Nixon. But the fact is Congress was very methodical in its investigations. In the end many Republicans wanted him to leave.
Contrast the Congress back then which had people like Sam Ervin with today's which has ass clowns like John Boehner and Darrell Issa.

(16,286 posts)I no longer tolerate (by that i mean in discussions either in person or online) teaparty people or cons of any kind...
The VAST VAST majority are racists, xenophobes, anti semitic and homophobic.
I wont debate them because they are putrid people...
plain and god damn simple as that
