Why Aren’t More Americans Atheists?

Turns out it has nothing to do with science. And everything to do with politics.

By NICK SPENCER
August 05, 2014

Many expressed surprise recently when, in one of its periodic surveys of Americans’ views of other faiths, the Pew Research Center found that atheists fare poorly—fully 40 percent of those polled described their views toward atheists as “cold.” Jews, Catholics, Evangelicals, Buddhists, Hindus, Mormons—all are viewed more favorably than nonbelievers. Only around 2 percent of Americans identify themselves as atheists, according to Pew, even though religious observance, measured by things like church attendance and daily prayer, has been trending downward for decades.

You might think that America would be fertile ground for the rise of atheism. After all, the United States is the most scientifically advanced society in human existence, and as far as atheism has a history—and it is an oddly uncharted one—it is popularly believed to be of slow, steady scientific advance.

Once upon a time, so the story goes, people believed that the world was young and flat, that God made everything including people in a few, frantically busy days, and that earthquakes and thunderstorms were examples of his furious rage, which you ignored at your peril. Into this sorry state of affairs, emerged a thing called “science” and, despite the best efforts of ignorant, self-serving clerics who wished to keep the people in utmost darkness, “science” proved that none of the above was true. Gradually, wonderfully, the human race matured, with every confident scientific step forward pushing our infantile, crumbling ideas of the divine closer to oblivion. “Extinguished theologians lie about the cradle of every science, as the strangled snakes besides that of Hercules,” as Thomas Huxley, the English biologist known as “Darwin’s bulldog,” memorably put it.

The problem with this particular creation myth is that whilst it is true enough to be believable, it is not true enough to be true. “Science”—if we can treat that collection of disparate disciplines as one single, coherent enterprise—did have something to do with the growth of atheism in the West, but very much less than most imagine. Those three great moments of scientific progress—the Copernican revolution in the 16th century, the scientific revolution in the 17th and the Darwinian in the 19th—were hardly atheistic at all. Copernicus was a priest; Francis Bacon, the father of modern science, devout; and Charles Darwin incredulous that anyone could imagine evolution demanded godlessness. “It seems to me absurd to doubt that a man may be an ardent Theist & an evolutionist,” he wrote in 1879.

An atheist simply does not believe in a God. One can be both agnostic and atheist. Saying I don't know and I also see no reason to believe.
And it does not involve faith to say I see absolutely no evidence to support the existence of a God. It is actually the absence of faith.
There are many things for which there is no evidence and for which one doesn't need faith to not believe. Why do you give a special exemption for God.

It's quite simple. With no facts showing there is, or is not a superior being, one relies on faith to believe one or the other.

And there is evidence that the Universe runs without a controlling intelligence.
Do you need faith to not believe in elves or bigfoot or alien visitors, or does the absence of any evidence lead you to not believe?
With no facts showing their aren't any invisible pink unicorns, should we say that they might exists?
Why does the Superior Being theory have any validity? Because some people believe? People believe in lots of things that aren't real.

Nothing wrong with saying "I don't know" .

I am saying atheism is the absence of belief. One doesn't have faith that God doesn't exist, one simple sees no reason to believe given the absence of any evidence to support the idea. If evidence is presented, than one should reevaluate.

Atheism is the absence of belief.
Do believe little green men do not visit you at night, or do you just not see any reason to believe it.
why are you giving a God a special position when it comes to existence. As I have shown there are a multitude of things were non-belierf does not require faith.
Why should I not apply the same rational way of thinking to God.
Are you saying not believing in Zeus or Isis or Odin is faith as well?

but theories or hypothesis that fail to show any evidence to support them should be abandoned.
The God hypothesis is counter to much of what we do know and there is nothing we know that supports it.
It takes no faith to disregard the hypothesis, merely seeing the absence of evidence.
All the facts not in comes to close to the God of the Gaps argument.

What proof/facts do you have there is or isn't a supreme being/deity/god?

The religious nuts may be more dangerous, but the belief, or lack thereof requires faith in belief or non-belief.

One would need to prove to me that there is something there.
Atheism isn't not about making claims that there isn't a god. Some atheists do. That's called gnostic atheism.
I need no faith to not believe in Unicorns. But, if somebody took me to a Unicorn ranch, I'd then believe in unicorns. No faith necessary.

That you require evidence against, when there is zero evidence for.
Does not believing in faries or the Loch Ness monster require faith?
What about the Ether or N-Rays, do we need faith to not accept them?

If you do not believe in god, you are an atheist. FULL STOP. It doesn't matter why you don't believe in god. You don't need to disbelieve in god. Not believing is sufficient.

If you think that god's existence is unknowable then you are an agnostic. This says nothing about your belief in god. You can be agnostic and a devout Christian. In fact there are very famous agnostic arguments in favor of belief in god.

Agnostic does not mean "nice atheist" or "open minded atheist" or any of the other common things the term is misconstrued as by atheists that run away from the label atheist.

Actually, deep down, I have faith that most people are agnostics.

the absence of belief does not require faith. It is saying there is no evidence for the belief.
Do you need a leap of faith to not believe in Zeus or Baal or Vishnu or the Flying Spaghetti Monster. Or is the absence of belief in the God of the Bible just the one where non-belief is faith?

And what of people who have a sense of spirituality, but don't accept the idea of any one religion?

They want to think that when shit hits the fan there is some power that will pull their ass out of the fire.

To some it might be a little much to handle that when you die there is just nothing.

It'd be cool to get to hang out in cloud mansions after death, but it'd also be cool if Santa would bring me a Jetski.
