respect him more and more for his candidness and his ability to talk at a level that most Americans can understand him. His press conferences are in my mind 'teachable moments'.
Also - I always think about how bad Dubya was in similar situations. Many times he didn't even understand the question that was asked him. Other times he didn't really answer the question - he just babbled on with gibberish. He really couldn't string a sentence together most times.
I so do appreciate this President and I have to believe that the Press that covers these news conferences appreciate him as well.

I think a reckoning is coming for the corporate media and their corporate GOP brethren and it is coming soon.
Keep the powder dry, sir, keep it at the ready....I think we have seen nothing yet of his oratory skill.

(2,166 posts)GWB was a nightmare that I want to forget, but shouldn't. Looking back, I can't believe Americans allowed that man to be POTUS.

(57,936 posts)For all his faults, Obama is a great president, probably the second greatest in my lifetime. I also liked Jimmy Carter.

(10,056 posts)He has been a decent president but there are numerous things to be critical about.
We all know he is a smart guy.
Let's talk about issues and dispense with the cheerleading.

(25,261 posts)I automatically think that both of you would be pro-Obama. I'm surprised by your responses to me with respect to the President.
Now I realize that President Obama hasn't accomplished all that he set out to do - but our Repub friends on the other side of the aisle - haven't been all that cooperative with him since his election as President. And the MSM piles on him any chance they get.
So yeah - I can understand SOME disappointment in him - but he still is the best thing we have going for us. And I do find him inspiring and one smart cookie.
Now we can help him out and help him make good on his promises - if we can GOTV and win back the House and maintain the Senate. However, I do get worried when people within our ranks here on DU - are disenchanted with him and have soured out on him.
What I find interesting - is that many of my Repub friends have soured out on their Party and now understand Obama and will vote in Nov 2014 to help him out and make him more effective. At the same time - many of our Dem friends have soured out on him and are going to sit out 2014. Makes one wonder if we'll ever get ahead here.

(55,981 posts)adulation OP's posted in GD. I don't mind OP's that praise his accomplishments, but the pure adulation goes too far. There is a special Group that is carefully patrolled to eliminate all discussions that aren't adulation. I think that's fine.
As far as the President's performance, while he has won some battles, we are still losing the war. In fact, it looks like he is fighting for the other side in a number of battles, like the TPP, and XL Pipeline. In my opinion a liberal worth his or her salt will never be satisfied until we have freedom, liberty and no hungry American children.
As far as his last press conference, I learn something also. He is going to rationalize and minimize the torture by our nation. That is unacceptable.

(6,151 posts)I look forward to the day when a lot of his most unreasonable detractors have to eat their words. And I earnestly hope they choke on them.
And yes, I too enjoy those press conferences. Maybe it makes me a little nerdy, but I actually enjoy fine speeches as well and have recordings of the best from the past. Maybe it's partly because I heard them fresh at the time.

(17,656 posts). . . a subject -- like immigration reform -- that the mainstream media has almost convincingly perpetrated in to a seemingly complex subject too hard for ordinary people to understand all of the intricate details involved with it, and then boils it down to an 8th grader's level, clear to the point that even journalists like Brian Williams can understand what he is talking about.
I think that is the main reason why Obama is more popular today amongst most rational, moderates than Bush was, especially at this point in his 2nd term of office.
That was mostly because Bush was so full of himself, like when he did the "I've got (political) capitol, and I intend to spend it" speech right after the fraudulent 2004 election.
Phony baloney bravado like that, plus the fact that Bush could never talk in public "off the cuff" with reporters with ease, like Obama does all of the time, without totally looking like a jackass, embarrassing those moderates who may have voted for Bush, caused Bush's favorability numbers to plummet like a falling star during his 2nd term in the White House.
