Encountered a situation today that made me sad, but I don't know how to resolve in my mind.

I was getting my hair cut when a blind woman came in with her service dog.

The lady that cuts my hair is a HUGE animal lover, actively involved with rescue work, etc.

When the woman and her service dog came in she gave a low groan, and proceeded to tell me that the woman DID NOT LIKE her service dog. Not because the dog didn't do his duty, but because he was too big, and too hairy and a male. Apparently, she never gives the dog any approval or affection (this proved to be true from what I observed from the time she was there).

The dog has really long, thick fur and it was visibly matted and dirty.
My hairdresser said it had been much worse in the past, until she confronted the woman about it.
She said, "Well, I CAN'T SEE!"
My hairdresser responded, "Well don't you ever touch him?"
"No! Not if I can avoid it!"
"How can you tell if he's OK?"
"If something was really wrong I'd be able to tell!"

She refuses to return him to the guide dog service because that would mean another long wait for a dog.

In the meantime, the dog seemed to be doing his job, but just looked, well depressed.

I don't want to sit in judgment of someone with a major handicap, but jeez!
This dog hasn't FAILED in any way, and he's going to live his whole life with no love or affection.

It just really bummed me out.

People with disabilities don't get a pass to be assholes to the animals who are dependent on them.

I agree with the above poster. The people who raise those dogs don't spend all that time and effort in order to hand them over to someone who'll neglect them. Definitely let them know.

Granted, I love animals already, so any animal that crosses my path gets love, but jeez!

She needs a good lecture and her dog NEEDS grooming and affection - it'd not only make him happy, it'd extend his life! Even if I had to pay for his grooming and visit her occasionally to love on her dog.

And, as hobbit709 said, I'd also contact the guide dog service just in case they could do something. No dog should suffer emotional isolation, especially not a sensitive, trained one.

Of course, I'm confrontational when it comes to protecting the under-dog of any species. Done it many times.

Guide Dogs For The Blind is the main organization, I think.

That poor puppy.

I work with Deaf people, and sometimes Deaf/Blind people. There are great people, average ones and some real dickweeds out there. There are people who hate the whole world because they're consumed with resentment.

I also once caught a quadriplegic person stealing from vendors at a carnival, and then she AND her husband went ballistic for being confronted.

Jerkism is an equal opportunity affliction.

I'm not sure it's possible to each someone-who-isn't-giving about giving-as-good-as-they're-getting, but there must be someone from the agency that places the dogs who might be able to help the woman have a more productive relationship with her dog. I'm shocked no one picked up on this when they were placing the dog. The bond is the most essential factor of all.

I confess that I don't know a lot about how it was done, but I give money to a "dogs for the deaf" charity and they always talk about how the process of getting a good match is so important.

It kind of boggles my mind how this could have happened unless the woman put on a big act that she was so happy to get the dog and didn't say anything about wanting a smaller, short-haired female.

the woman is lucky it wasn't me sitting there, because she would have gotten more than an earful. having a disability does NOT excuse a person being an insufferable, hateful, cruel person.
