A camera on every officer that records whenever they are taking part in official police business. It protects good cops from bogus complaints and it protects us all from the bad cops.

That way when a young man is gunned down by police, we know exactly what happened.

(3,891 posts)If you mean as a police officer, you don't want a camera on you recording your actions, I as a member of the public who pays taxes, and suffers from the actions of the thin blue line, I definitely want cameras in your office.
If you mean as an office worker you don't want cameras in your office, that is a discussion to be had with your boss. For now, let's discuss this issue about cameras on police shall we?
I can certainly understand why police would not want cameras around. Because when they are around the usual routine lies are exposed.
I can understand why these officers would not want a camera around.
I can understand why these officers would want the cameras to go away. The video here is used to show that the cops lied on the report of the incident. Don't worry, the cops weren't fired.
I bet this cop really wishes that there were no cameras available that night don't you?
Now, if the police were recorded, and perhaps even a bit more respectful towards the public then perhaps we wouldn't see many of these.
But if you are a police officer who denounces tools of accountability, then chances are you'll be seeing a lot more events like those. Of course, if you are a police officer, you already have an us versus them mentality towards the public.
This officer was a real tough guy right? He tried to delete the video.
The world is waking up to the tactics of the police. The public is starting by demanding changes, and one of the changes they're demanding is cameras.
Because more people are learning about what is going on.
And they're not pleased.

(34,845 posts)Not to mention organized crime. But cameras on every officer, automatically transferred to a black box server, encrypted, available for instant review? I'm good with that.

(3,208 posts)I would think the police officers who are good at their jobs would appreciate it as well. It could help them in some situations, to show what the offender was doing.
I am looking at the "equipment" they are using in Ferguson and thinking what they paid for that would equip many departments in Missouri.
We are under surveillance in many public places. Police officers are working for the community in the community.
Obviously being on camera does not stop some of the worse cops, but at least, in those cases the proof is right there.
(Seems like the Rodney King incident would have changed things in society, but I guess we are kind of slow).

(230 posts)I generally avoid threads regarding LE here on DU, because it almost invariably results in nothing pleasant being said and tempers flaring.
Our department started requiring us to wear audio recorders about three years ago, and switched to both audio and video about a year and a half ago. Not only did it reduce the number of complaints that were directed at our department, it revealed a huge number of complaints to be maliciously false. Accusations ranging from unprofessional behavior to abuse and evidence planting.
Both thepolice and community are guilty of false claims and this seems to have been a great benefit for both parties. It was interesting to watch the change in behavior on both sides of the line. In 18 years on duty, I have served as a patrol officer, Emergency Response team member, and my current position in traffic enforcement. This has been the single biggest "Win-Win" that I have been witness to in my career.
I think we should require the same thing of all of our elected officials. Full time video and audio recordings of all official business. No more closed door meetings and back room deals. Root out corruption on all levels!
