Follow-up on the SWAT raid near my St. Paul Home

Earlier this week, I described a search warrant service and pre-dawn raid that involved SWAT and other police at a home across the street from mine. Here's the thread: http://www.democraticunderground.com/10025383825

Since then, I've done a couple of things: First, I emailed the chief of police in St. Paul, asking for information on the reason for that warrant and for information on what it was about. That email was forwarded to the Division Commander for my sector of the city. He called me about an hour later. We talked for almost an hour, and I learned a good deal about the situation. This was the fourth time in four years that a felony search warrant and search was done on that house. He couldn't provide a lot of detailed information, since the investigation is still underway, but was very helpful in answering my questions.

Turns out that the residents there are apparently involved in a meth distribution network in the area. They're not selling from that house, but are part of a larger wholesale operation. At this point, the police, county attorney (MN's name for District Attorney) and the state police are carrying out a seizure of property with regard to this. That property will apparently include the house itself, which will become property of the City of St. Paul and will be sold. Two cars were seized during the raid earlier this week. According to the police commander, what happened last week was "the final nail" in their case against the group.

Second: Through a records search on the property, I found the name of the owner of that property, and then did a court case search on that person's name. Multiple arrests and prosecutions for sales of large quantities of meth and other drugs. Not very nice people, it appears. All of this information was found on government database Internet sources that are part of the transparency program here in Minnesota. They're not easy to use, but can be accessed by anyone willing to deal with an awkward interface.

Yesterday, several vehicles showed up at the house and the owner, other residents, and others removed much of what was there. It looks like they're all moving out of the neighborhood, which will make just about everyone on that street very happy, since we're all pretty tired of police actions there.

Good riddance to the people living in that house! The meth business is an ugly one. I would be very happy if drugs were removed from criminal status and decriminalized. That would help to stop the trade in illegal drugs and increase the peace, I believe. In the meantime, though, so much crime is connected to the drug trade that it will be a relief to see these people gone from my street, at least.

I hope they weren't actually cooking meth in the house (I assume not, or else they'd have had a HAZMAT team out there). Did you use the MNCIS database? Amazing what you can find out if you know where to look.

3. No, no cooking in that house. I don't really know the details,

but the SWAT raid was part of a larger operation. I did use the MNCIS system for part of my search, yes, along with the Ramsey County Property records. It takes a slight trick to actually discover the owner of a property if you're not a professional. Once you get the property records up, you can look at the current Property Tax Pay Stub. The owner of record is shown there, even if the property taxes are rolled into the mortgage payment.

You can even find arrest mug shots on the Internet. That's how I was sure I had the right person.

where the Walter House was abandoned, boarded up, graffiti decorated, lawn unkempt, windows broken and his next-door neighbor was watering her adjacent lawn, trying to keep up appearances. If the city has now taken it, expect some depreciation spill-over to the entire neighborhood.

4. That all depends. St. Paul does a fair job of dealing with seized

real estate, and the neighbors will take care of keeping the lawn decent. Better an empty house than a crime scene house, as far as property values go, really.

seized goods, it seems St Paul cops used the proceeds to go to Hawaii for a conference.

6. OK. I'm not sure what that has to do with the house across the street.

Maybe you can explain that for me. I have no connection to the SPPD, except the telephone. I was glad they called back right away in response to my query.

As far as your example is concerned, the Metro Gang Task Force, which wasn't just a Saint Paul thing, was shut down over that stuff in 2011. I'm also not responsible for that. I read it in the news, like everyone else. Again, it has little to do with my concerns about the house across the street. I'm simply relating what happened on my block this week.

My conclusions? I'm glad those people will not be here any longer. I'm sure my neighbors will be glad as well.

And I wish I didn't have to take those. The BP meds make me sleepy and a little dizzy when I stand up after sitting for some time. Minor side effect.

I hope you're not suggesting that I use meth.

It's not triggered, though, by suggestions like that one. You might feel differently. I don't know. I do know that you cannot answer for the other poster, though.

Here, try this:

Sounds like a dangerous situation.

It's amazing the police talked to you for an hour. Here in Minneapolis they won't investigate stolen cars.

Meth and heroin, those are nasty nasty, very bad drugs.

If you decriminalize you need to use the money you'd be saving on enforcement to treat and care for and rehabilitate users of the really nasty stuff.

Take the savings and spend it on opiate rehab, too, since that's really the biggest killer and largest addiction the American people face.
