What happens when young black men decide they aren't going to an easy statistic and potential "King Kongs" (yup, saw that right here on DU) to be beaten, thrown, in jail, or gunned down in the fucking street and decide the police are an existential threat?
If you don't want to find out then it is past time to rein in the blue gang, make them accountable to the laws they are trusted to enforce, break down the blue wall, end the failed and stupid drug war that serves as the principal excuse for not only most interactions, the justification of much of the numbers of officers and budgets, but is the rationale for aggression and cause of distrust from the citizen.
We must reduce the role of community police in anti terror efforts as not to replace one excuse for another and really evaluate training, review, and oversight.
It is time to take substantive action or we will be in real war zones before long and then that violence will spread, the suburbs and gated communities will offer little protection, eventually the money and the votes will be followed.
Time for all Americans to stand up to this stuff and put a stop to it before the whole society melts down completely.

(15,189 posts)Better armed police. This is only going to get worse before it gets better. Who couldn't see this coming. In the UK no gun nuts, and police don't carry guns.

(25,029 posts)The will behind whatever weapon is bigger issue than the capacity of the armament. It doesn't take any military style weaponry to melt shit completely down. No cycle of escalation required just enough of a match and hell is unleashed.
The power of peace keepers is not created by the superiority of their arms and never has been in a free society (and doomed to eventually fail in closed ones) but sufferance and buy in of communities. By the faith of the masses in the broad justice of the law.
These things are what is at risk here. You cannot police when the community will not bear it, you can only make a go of occupation then and as you see by the particular arms and vehicles, that seems to be the agenda.
We must dial back the police. Full stop, no "yeah buts". No bigger impact stress point than the stupid failed drug war and I think that is the logical starting point but if there are some direct culture change tactics then I'm game for different remedies too but on this I'm hearing a justification, an excuse that is passing the buck from the police and the systemic problems. No accountability for power and excuse making for grave abuses, as is not unusual today.
