Lets partner with Syria against ISIS

Assad would love to squash them. The Syrian popular uprising seems to be getting nowhere anyway. Assad has no interest in doing stuff outside Syria, he isn't a medieval lunatic, he doesn't behead journalists or Christians. And we can't really do much harm to Isis in Iraq because they're nurtured from Syria. Isis seems a genuine threat to us - so let's get with the "enemy of my enemy is my friend" middle eastern program.

I don't know if it's a good idea to be friends with somebody who throws cluster-bombs into residential areas.

14. Israel uses cluster bombs in civilian areas also

Artillery shot at the three motorbike Hamas people driving by the UN school consists of thousand pound cluster bombs. We are friends with Israel despite their rowdy ways so we can at least partner with Assad attacks on Isis. Yes, Assad is creepy. But so are we, so is Israel. Let's be realistic here.

He doesn't need to trust us. We gave Saddam Hussein photos of Iranian soldiers so he could gas them. We can similarly supply photos to Assad. And intelligence and air support against Isis.

We did not want either side in the Iraq Iran war to win. So when Iraq would get a lead we helped Iran. When Iran got ahead we helped Iraq. As a result they were bogged down in a protracted war keeping both weak. Our strategy caused a huge number of people to die, it kept both countries weak and distracted. That is exactly what we wanted. With luck we can get the same in Syria. Sure it will cause huge numbers to die but compared to our need to maintain control over middle-eastern oil, that's hunky dory with us. Which do you fear more - another million people dead or gas fifty cents more expensive? Obviously the US chooses cheaper oil. And Isis might actually kill someone in the US so helping Syria is a no brainer (assuming our international politics values).

13. For 3 years Assad has done little against ISIS, preferring to go after more moderate opposition.

That helped him present his case of "It's me of the terrorists." As long as a moderate opposition alternative existed, he considered that a much greater threat to his hereditary rule than a few fanatic fundamentalists.

He has very recently seemed to have realized the threat poised by the group that he ignored for so long.

Syria jets hit Islamic State targets in Raqqa

Regime planes bombard Islamic State positions as fighters close in on Tabqa air base in northern Raqqa province. Activists say Syrian jets have bombarded positions of the Islamic State group in the northern province of Raqqa as the self-declared jihadists close in on the last army base in the region.

Government forces have previously held off from targeting the Islamic State group, formerly known as ISIL - a strategy that has aided the group's battle against other rebels such as the Islamic Front coalition, the Free Syrian Army and al-Qaeda's affiliate in the Syrian war, the Nusra Front.

Syria's president, Bashar al-Assad, has long painted the uprising in Syria as a foreign-backed conspiracy and his enemies say he has allowed the Islamic State to grow to promote that idea.

The attacks come after the Islamic State group on Thursday captured the headquarters of Syria's 17th Division, based in the Raqqa area. It posted a video online of its operation.
