Without David Gregory or Chuck Todd GOP Talking Points Get Challenged On Meet The Press
By: Jason Easley

Chris Jansing was the fill in moderator on Meet The Press, and without David Gregory or Chuck Todd, Republican talking points about the threat of ISIS to America were strongly challenged.

Transcript:
REP. MIKE ROGERS (R-MI): Oh, its a very real threat. You saw the very barbaric behavior. And one of the problems is its gone unabated for nearly two years, and that draws people from Britain to across Europe, even the United States, to go and join the fight. They see that as a winning ideology, a winning strategy, and they want to be a part of it. And thats what makes it so dangerous. They are one plane ticket away from U.S. shores. And thats why were so concerned about it.
CHRIS JANSING: But weve heard the Pentagon say that, right now, they are not in a position to launch an attack on the United States. Is there any credible intelligence that ISIS is either planning that or has the capability to do it.
REP. MIKE ROGERS: Well, Im going to dispute that. So we know that, and the number 2,000 of Westerners with Western passports is low. Intelligence has a very different number and its much higher than that. And the very fight between Al Qaeda that allowed ISIS to separate from Al Qaeda in Syria was the fact that they wanted to conduct Western-style operations .
CHRIS JANSING: But arent we, Congressman, significantly safer than we were on 9/11 in terms of being able to keep those kinds of threats out of the United States?
REP. MIKE ROGERS: Well, we have a better system of trying to do it, but were just not configured. We, the United States intelligence services and Department of Defense and administrative policy is not configured in a way to continue a tempo that allows disruption. The reason ISIS is so successful is there was nothing deterring them for years. So they recruited, they financed, they trained. All of that was happening.
And so, yes, we might be okay if we continue the posture that were in from a defensive posture. But remember, they get new recruits every single day. And whats dangerous, think of this: If thats a British citizen, we believe it was, you have somebody that was watching and participating in the whole exercise of making that video. That individual goes back home and, is again, buys one plane ticket, theyre in the United States. We may or may not know who that individual is. Thats whats so dangerous about this, and why we cant let them continue unabated.
CHRIS JANSING: So what do we do about it? Weve seen what the U.K. has done, for example. Theyve been revoking passports of U.K. citizens who have gone over to Syria to fight so they cant come back West. Obviously the president is considering a whole range of options. We already have air strikes in Iraq; questions about whether there should be air strikes in Syria. Should there, for example, be more small teams of special ops on the ground to gather more intelligence? What do we do now?
Jansing asked Rep. Rogers (R-MI) is there is any credible intelligence to back up his claim that ISIS is a plane ticket away from attacking the United States, and he never answered the question. Chris Jansings questioning of Rogers was very logical. She didnt let him get away with repeating his talking points unchallenged. In a moment that has been virtually unseen since Tim Russert died, she made him defend his claims.
This is the kind of questioning that viewers want to see on Meet The Press. Jansing challenged her guest with facts. Meet The Press doesnt need a liberal or a conservative moderator. It needs someone who is prepared and committed to not accepting talking points as answers.
Unfortunately, Chuck challenging Republican lies isnt my job Todd will be taking over the program. Viewers can expect a return to the endless repetition of talking points next month. For one week, it was nice to see a journalist on a Sunday show ask questions that werent based on talking points and follow up the answers with deeper questions.
Real journalism made a brief return to Meet The Press. Enjoy it now, because Chuck Todd is coming in September.

(174 posts)I have been watching her since she was on Channel 13 in Albany, NY. She would be the perfect host for Meet the Press. Do you think we will ever see that?

(2,479 posts)That's why she did not get the job!
She might have said "My God, what the heck have we been spending all that extra money on our 'second' Department of Defense, or Homeland Security for?" "Heck, if you can't defend us by scooping up and spying on every bit of information that is laid down out there, what good are you?" She might have just aid "Well, that is entirely speculation, directed at getting us to accelerate and enter into another expensive war, that we obviously can't afford."
Way more liberal ground could be had.

(6,045 posts)Are there ever any Democrats who can defend the administration's policy of "Lets not rush off to another fucking war unless we have no other recourse?"
Seriously, Obama's poll numbers really do rise & fall due in large part on how the Sunday talk shows do their coverage...Obama lost 5% points when all 3 networks had nothing but the architects of the 2003 Iraq war on talking about how bad Obama's decision to leave Iraq was when yes he campaigned on getting out of Iraq but that deal was done before he was ever elected but none of that was ever mentioned!!!
These Sunday talk shows, CBS included, are no better than FOX "News' if they are only going to present one side...Because Journalist in this country are like the cops in this country they have completely lost all sense of what their true job description is suppose to be...Instead they (Journalist not cops) do the easiest possible thing & pretend to act neutral even when they know one side is lying or is dead wrong.
OH Yeah, If the above was suppose to be an example of a journalist challenging right wing talking points then we really are FUCKED!! She let him run his mouth the entire 3 minute video clip...NO CHALLENGE AT ALL!! Seriously, WTF? What did I miss? Or are we simply comparing how the other host cheer on the GOP while she simply let him speak uninterrupted?
SAD.

(6,610 posts)... ISIS is "one plane ticket away from US shores" & therefore a threat to the US our response should be "So you're saying that the homeland security measures put in place by the Bush administration in the wake of 9/11 are inadequate & ineffective?"

(1,648 posts)Are we not also barbaric in blowing up hundreds or thousands of children, elderly, civilian innocents by our drones? When we send in "air support" they ain't just on the sidelines cheering, they're blowing folks up and what do we expect these survivors to do, just thank God they are alive? They are gonna strike out at any westerner (especially American) they find. Now I ain't saying these folks are justified, it's just that it's foolish to think they won't strike out. Calling them barbarians might make the person saying it feel better, but does this help those who are captives?

(7,404 posts)ISIS is very well funded. You might say it is an operation carried out by a wing of the 1% so you find out where their funding is coming from and you shut that off, even if you have to go after Swiss bank accounts to do that.

(1,307 posts)He's not likeable or interesting. How long will it take before they ditch him if the ratings remain the same?
Chris Jansing would be a wonderful MTP host - she is smart, the first MTP female host, and her being attractive would certainly help her get the job.

(47,672 posts)I might have actually watched the show. Haven't watched Meet the Press in years. Too bad NBC didn't think of someone like Jansing. There is a lot of talent over at MSNBC and they chose Chuck Todd. Evidently they don't want people to watch the show.

(63,243 posts)He was every bit the millionaire, beltway cheerleader as all the rest. Gregory and Todd are awful, but Russert is much better in retrospect than in reality IMO.
Props to Ms. Jansing though. Of course, this means she'll be off the air for the foreseeable future...

(1,364 posts)I find it incredible that many posters look with nostalgia upon Timmeh Russert. He was no better than Gregory or Upchuck. IMHO. I stopped watching it after he practically fellated Cheney on air. BTW, her maiden name is Kapostasy, she is of Hungarian descent from Fairport Harbor, Ohio.

(3,128 posts)MTP has been a propaganda venue for the Republicans since Tim Russert died and once NBC pulled one of its most highly watched shows (on a network which few people watched), "Harry's Law," because of the demographics of the viewers, I decided that, since I am not in their preferred demographic, they would not be on my watch list of TV.
The sooner NBC crashes and burns, the better!

(5,060 posts)It's going to have to stop being a bullhorn for TeaPublican talking points. There is a reason all the Sunday talking heads programs are losing market share at an alarming rate - everyone has heard it all before. Trickle down economics, chicken hawk rhetoric, and now more than ever thinly veiled racism, sexism, ageism, and a profound contempt for the poor. The key demographic has switched off - not only to the chattering class on a Sunday morning but talk radio too. It's just groundhog's day for the hate speech crowd.
The real question is - do any of these programs actually advance the public's understanding of the complex decisions that face our elected representatives and so our Democracy? If not, they have utterly failed the promise that brought them to the public airwaves in the first place. If that's the case perhaps it's time they were all replaced with infomercials for vitamin supplements and walk-in tubs.
