So...Santorum's out, Romney's in. And his running mate will be...? (Official Speculation Thread?)

Will the repugs try 'The Rogue Woman Gambit' again?

Or...Marco Rubio?

He's at least as 'nice looking' as Mitt and also has good hair.
AND, he's a white male.
Requisite red-white-and-blue tie in this photo.

His academic credentials aren't quite as impressive as Mitt's.
"He attended Tarkio College and Santa Fe Community College before graduating from the University of Florida. He earned his law degree from the University of Miami School of Law in 1996."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marco_Rubio

"Tarkio College was a college that operated in Tarkio, Missouri, from 1883 to 1992. The institution was supported by the United Presbyterian Church in the United States of America[1]. It closed after filing for bankruptcy protection in 1991."

OK, what's YOUR speculation?

This gal.....

Susana Martinez, Republican Governor of New Mexico

For Mitt, that's a Fourfer;
She's of Mexican descent,
She's Female,
She's a governor of a SouthWestern state since 2010
and She's not a Mormon

Since Susana Martinez has taken office, she has set out a budget proposal for fiscal year 2012,[16] as well as establishing a moratorium on all state vehicle purchases till 2012.[17] Martinez has also prohibited all state agencies from hiring lobbyists, limiting the claim of executive privilege to help promote a more transparent government, and has created a small business friendly task force.[17][18]

On January 31, 2011 Governor Martinez signed an executive order rescinding sanctuary status for illegal immigrants who commit crimes in New Mexico while protecting victims and witnesses of criminal acts.[19]

According to her 2010 gubernatorial campaign website, Martinez is pro-life and is opposed to elective abortion. She supports parental notification laws for minors under 13-years-old who seek an abortion. She is also opposed to same-sex marriage. Martínez supports a balanced budget and lower government spending. She favors putting taxpayer money into a rainy day fund, and refunding taxpayers to attempt to stimulate growth.

Martínez has promised to revamp the state's education plan by investing in private education.[20] She will seek to repeal state laws that provide illegal immigrants access to driver’s licenses as well as deny children of illegal immigrants access to higher education through the New Mexico Lottery Scholarship.[21] Martinez opposes New Mexico's medical marijuana program, but has indicated that repealing New Mexico's existing law is not a priority.[22]

After taking office, she has pushed for an increase in private investment to complete the US$212 million state-funded[23] Spaceport America project. In order to drive the new effort, Gov. Martinez appointed an entirely new board of directors to oversee the Spaceport Authority.[24

And I'm not sure how that will work out
on the national stage....

Also don't know what that would do to
the conservative base, in terms of the
fact that leaves no Protestant on the ticket.

But yeah......she certainly could help him some....
but keep in mind that Hispanics or women don't vote
for a candidate just because he/she represents them
via race or gender. Remember that Barack Obama was
not the first Black candidate for President....and many Blacks
did not vote for Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton during the primaries
that both ran in. In addition, many women did not vote for
Sarah Palin. So I think, at the end of the day, policies matter
much more than gender/race identification.

He or She must be a tea party favorite.
Since Romney has a huge problem with female voters, so it will be very practical for him to choose a female running mate.
Considering all these factors, my bet is Sarah Palin.

He doesn't seem to be able to pin down an opinion on any other issue. So why would his running mate be any different? He'll probably float out a bunch of names. The media RW hacks will shout about each one at the last second in total desperation he'll go totally against type a take someone completely based on what he thinks his base wants. So I'm looking at a total party hack like Scott Walker or Paul Ryan. Anyone with any chance in 2016 like Rubio or Christie won't even take his phone calls if they're smart.

It's more important to Rmoney to try and retain as much of the currently-fleeing far right bloc as he possibly can. Not only to try and offset the gender gap, but to prevent that bloc from jumping behind a third party candidate capable of garnering significant numbers. The GOP has been on the receiving end of benefits from a "Nader scenario," and they'll know it's critical to avoid that sort of occurrence.

Of course, that would mean pretty much accepting the gender gap. It would mean pretty much conceding the larger portion of uncommitted independent moderates. They'd be betting the farm on retaining a constituency that is furious over the choice of candidates.

But they may have no choice. Trying to beat Obama in the middle is very probably a losing fight even if the threat of a far-right third party candidate never materializes. For the same reasons Obama has been something of a disappointment to many progressives, he retains appeal to moderates. Unless our national slide into economic oblivion becomes even steeper, he's going to win that constituency.

The alternate scenario would be that the GOP assumes that enough voters on the far right will hold their nose and vote for "anybody but Obama." That assumption would free them to nominate a female moderate-to-conservative... which might make for a close race, if the above assumption about far right voters is correct. A huge risk...

Another factor: they desperately need someone more mediagenic than their nominee. Mittens is just not able to come across as likable...or as all that competent, really. His image presentation is at odds with his political positioning - that is, he has that vintage "old people's idea of a (white) statesman/newscaster/car salesman" thing going on. That scrams "right wing conservative," but his political image has been carefully depicted as moderate. There's a disconnect, and coupled with his poker-up-the-ass stiffness, he's just not great on camera. He needs a charismatic running mate...but "charismatic Republican" is damned near an oxymoron.
